Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CFB

Starr career workshop

Today I will be talking about a Starr career development workshop that I attended. The workshop I went to taught me about LinkedIn. It lasted around an hour, so it was short for the most part, but I still learned a lot. The workshop taught me the basics of LinkedIn. I was taught how to make a good profile, and in the process, I realized how similar it was to Facebook. LinkedIn is pretty much the professional version of Facebook, and since I do use Facebook a lot, LinkedIn didn’t see that new to me. It is a social network that allows people to explore future career options. I learned that using LinkedIn will give someone many opportunities to develop their career. I couldn’t believe that I never heard of LinkedIn before. It is extremely useful for someone looking to grow their career and I am very grateful I was able to attend this workshop.

Academic – Writing Center workshop

Today I attended a Writing Center workshop on using sources strategically. The man who tutored us went by the name of Joshua. He seemed like a really nice person, and as a matter of fact he was. Before the workshop began, Joshua had us all introduce ourselves. I stated that although I was here at the workshop for a freshmen seminar assignment, I also looked forward to learning about how I could use sources more strategically to aid me in a critical literary analysis paper I had to write. While teaching us, Joshua was very concise and to the point. He introduced BEAM to us, which stood for Background, Exhibit, Argument, and Method respectively. These four things were types of primary and secondary sources. I never knew sources could be distinguished in ways other than primary and secondary. Joshua also helped me to realize that whether a source is primary or secondary is mainly dependent on how the writer uses the source. Afterwards, we did some practice on identifying different types of sources using BEAM. Overall, I learned quite a lot from about sources from the workshop and I do look forward to attending other ones in the future.

Student Life – Baruch E sports association

Today I joined the Baruch E sports association and it was extremely fun. I didn’t expect there to be so many people, so I was very surprised at how crowded it was when I walked in. I met up with a bunch of my friends at the back of the room before the executives began talking. Because it was an e sports club, everyone was able to get intimate with each other quickly. We all had something in common. We were all gamers. The executives told us that most of the club’s interactions would be online. The club had internet platforms for which we could interact and game together if we ever wanted to. They had their own separate server for discord, which is a type of online voice and text chatting platform. The club had two sections. One was for casual gamers and the other was for competitive gamers. I had actually met a junior whose name is Brian and we were able to get intimate with each other. Brian, like myself is a very competitive person and we talked the whole day. It was really fun talking to him because we both played the same game, and in the game we played similar roles. I plan on joining the division 1 team for league of legends where I can compete at the highest level. I’m really looking forward to playing with future teammates. Competition excites me to no end.
