Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CFB

Career- Hillel Tech Fair

For my last and final blog for Freshman Seminar, I went to the Hillel Tech Fair on Thursday, November 16 at 12:30, during club hours. I found out about the fair through a friend who was looking for an internship or job to apply for. The fair took place the multipurpose room on the 1st floor. The flyer we were given said that five envelopes around the room were hidden for anyone to take. Inside the envelopes was a prize ranging from an Amazon Echo to a $10 Chipotle gift card.

When we went in finally inside they were serving free food and drinks to everyone. They had falafel sandwiches, curry chicken sandwiches, salads, etc… After everyone took a seat we were introduced to our panelists who would talk about their experience as a entrepreneur and answer questions from the host of the Hillel Tech Fair. In addition to the panel, their were also booths on the side introducing their companies and offering internships and jobs.

There were at least six different panelists that came from their own unique company that they either started or work for. One panelist started a business in education and tutoring for college students. Another panelist started a Messenger/Discord related platform for sport lovers. As the panel continued, the panelist gave us advice as young business majors and future entrepreneurs. They said “Throughout your future careers you’re going to fail, the more you fail, the more you learn and grow from your mistakes so don’t be afraid of failure.” As a business major, I would say that their advice struck me at first because of my fear of failure in life. However they were only speaking the truth. Throughout my future career there will be times where I’ll have to deal with failure, and with these failures I’ll have to learn and grow to start from scratch again.

Academic- Trip to the Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum was a great place to spend the day especially since being a Baruch student allows you to go there for free. Just one glance at the building and you’ll know you’re at the right place. With many different floors to choose from and every floor being unique in their own aspect I enjoyed exploring the museum.

On the first floor I was able to learn about black history and their experiences during the time of slavery. Learning about the different hardships people went through and their point of view of history really interested me. I was able to discover more about their daily lives and how slavery really impacted them. Although most of the stories were pretty sad and depressing, I enjoyed listening to each and everyone of them.

On the second floor that I visited, I learned about Ancient Egypt. The Ancient Egypt floor had many different exhibits ranging from mummies to hieroglyphic tablets. The tour guide that went around the museum gave me a brief description of each mummy which was cool. Although this floor wasn’t too interesting, it was exciting to see an ancient form of writing on the hieroglyphic tablets even though most of the tablets were broken and pieced back together like a puzzle.

Visiting the Brooklyn Museum was a great experience and I would definitely come back for free. Certain exhibits were a lot more interesting than others, I would say that the interactive exhibits made my time at the Brooklyn Museum more interesting than most museums I’ve been too. I would definitely recommend checking the Brooklyn Museum out, you’re going to find something you’re interested in for sure. All in all, I hope to go to more museums in the future.

Student Life- Club Activity

The club I went to on Thursday was the “She’s the First Club.” The reason behind going to this club is really random, however I had a good time at this club. As you already know, on Thursdays we have club hours and during these club hours there is free food. So my friend and I looked around the 3rd floor for a club with food and the first club we found was the “She’s The First Club.” We didn’t actually figure out what the club was until the GIM so when we first went in, one of the E-board members wanted us to sign in. When we asked her what club we were in, she told us that if we wanted the free food we had to stay for the whole GIM to find out. So for the next 2 hours we sat there listening to their presentation eating all their free food.

Their presentation was impressive and I learned a lot about what the club does and what they stand for. She’s The First Club supports girl’s education and hosts events and activities to educate people about the difficulties girls around the world face to get an education. Although the club is new, the E-board members seem to know what they’re doing in their specific department and how to run the club in general. The club president was very generous and I got to know about her and her major.

I felt that this assisted me in my first semester at Baruch because being in a club allows you to connect with other people and find people with similar majors or interests. In my case, I met people with an interest in majoring in marketing like the club president. Meeting these people and coming to the events hosted by the club allows me to be more active during my time at Baruch.
