Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CFB

Starr Career Development Center

I attended a workshop with a group of friends going into the room oblivious on what to expect. It was on LinkedIn a site that helps build your profile and provide network for future  jobs opportunities.

The foundation of LinkedIn is very much like Facebook. You first make your own profile about yourself. Afterwards you make connections with others and chat. It look very easy to use as it was very similar to Facebook expect it was much more professional, can’t put some silly things on your profile or chat informally.

LinkedIn sounds like a very good opportunity to gain more job opportunities. As you put your resume out there for people to look at and maybe take interest to you. It can help you with finding a job easier not having to go to different places to give people your resume to look at.

After learning about LinkedIn I”m planning to use it in the near future to look for a job or internship. But I wouldn’t recommend LinkedIn to others because thats increasing the competition.

Writing Workshop

For my academic activity I attended a writing center workshop. The main focus of the workshop was to teach students how to use sources strategically. I decided to go to this workshop specifically because I have a business assignment due and this would help me with writing it.

What I liked about the workshop was how it was in small groups so you would get the help and attention you needed. We went around introducing ourselves and mentioning why we decided to attend the workshop. It was comfortable knowing everyone had somewhat of the same interest as me, their main reason for attending the workshop was also for freshmen seminar blog.

We went right into discussing what are second and primary sources. It was good review what was considered a primary source and whats not under various different context. Overall I learned all primary sources can be a secondary source depending on the context. He then taught me something new, the four different types of sources. They were Background, Exhibit, Argument, and Method. We went on to see some example of a student using these four sources in her paper. Her story was interesting because it involved some of of the TV shows I grew up on.

Overall I thought the workshop was really helpful. I learned a lot on how to use sources in a paper. I recommend checking out the writing center as it was really helpful.

VSA

For student life activity I decided to attend a club, I was standing outside the VSA club room pondering weather to go in or not. I originally planned to join a fraternity but felt uneasy trying to “rush” to get in. I chose VSA because I was recommend to join by some upper classmate. However what drawn me into the room was the warm welcome from the VSA board. The members had big smiles on their faces and invited me to sit. They didn’t rush me in or pressure me, letting me know I can come in whenever I felt like I was ready. When I first sat in the room I was panicking, I didn’t know anyone in the room. But luckily the next two people who sat next to me were friends from the past. Thats when I met  James a board member who came up to us and started introduction himself and the club. In VSA we learned about Vietnamese food and new phrases. We watched a tutorial created by Maggie I think….on how to make summer rolls. What came after was probably the part that everyone enjoyed. We got to make our own summer rolls. I initially doubted the food, I thought it would taste horrible. So I asked for only lettuce and noodles taking out the protein. To my surprise it was not that bad, it went well with one of the sauces they gave out. The language workshop taught us the correct pronunciation for different foods. So when we go to restaurants the waiters will look at you impressed. Besides knowing the names to foods, they also taught us greetings and manners. We practiced each phrase twice before they surprised us with a pop quiz. First group to correctly label each picture with the correct translation wins. If we didn’t have Bryant we wouldn’t have a chance of winning. Shout out to Bryant for carrying. For my first time at VSA it was a lot of fun, gettingto know new people, and your own food, and learning some Vietnamese. I plan to join future events with VSA and get to know more people.
