Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DFD

Starr Development center

The Starr career development center is a service offered  by Baruch college that offers workshops to its attendees. These workshops have experts come in and educate people on a multitude of topics that will benefit them in their careers. An example is in early October where they had a workshop that focused on writing a better thesis statement. I attended this workshop. It was a very concise and to the point session. It took about an hour and a half from start to finish. Going in I had thought I was fine at writing thesis statements, but this workshop was actually helpful as it gave me more insight into making a thesis statement that will only improve my work in the future.

The Met

Yesterday I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Arts. It is a very cool place. Upon walking up to it, I was amazed by the sheer size of the building, and the quality of the artwork on it. When you enter you find yourself in the greek exhibit, where there are multiple statues from ancient greece. It’s amazing to be in the same room as so much history. Knowing that these statues I stood in front of were crafted by artists in ancient times was an otherworldly feeling. The ancient egypt section was also an amazing thing to see. There were multiple tools and pottery from ancient Egypt. It gave a great insight into what things were like back then. The employees were all very nice. I will likely go back there next time I have to do some research for a class.

Embracing my Jewish side

One of the clubs here at Baruch that I’ve been visiting the past few days is Hillel. Hillel is a club for (but not limited to) Jewish people. Since I’m technically part Jewish, I figured I’d drop by and see what it’s all about.

When I got there I was greeted by a bunch of people, some freshman most upperclassmen. They were sitting and talking while watching tennis. Immediately I realized this is something I could do. While there I mingled with some cool people. While I’m still not exactly sure what the central focus or purpose of the group really is, it was a cool vibe and a nice environment. It seems like a good tool to meet people and almost a warm up for other clubs I’ll eventually get into at Baruch. I can definitely see myself dropping by again in the future.
