Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DFD

Writing Center: Different class, different writing

I chose this writing seminar about interpreting writing assignments because I feel that knowing the different styles of writing each class or professor expects is crucial. An English professor may expect a different kind of analysis than a science professor would. We analyzed a prompt example to what the professor is tasking us with, what key components to add and what organization we should follow. I thought the resources we received will be extremely helpful later on in future assignments. One resource explained all the key verbs we may find in instructions summarize, analyze and discuss. This will help clarify my future assignments and help me structure my work efficiently to get a high grade. I also learned about the resources available to us like the reference librarians, written feedback and of course, the writing center itself. I feel prepared and calm knowing how to use the writing center. I would have to schedule earlier to get a longer time slot for a session. I plan on using this resource in my upcoming English narrative essay. I was nervous about projects, since I am not necessarily accustomed to the whole college experience. This session was able to give me a better sense in how I should organize my work and manage my time with written assignments.

From the session, I learned that writing assignments should be articulated in a way that builds s thesis. I have had trouble formulating the correct theses in my past assignments. So, perhaps, in the future, I could attend a session that revolves around creating a thesis. That way I can have a foundation for my writing. The Writing Center is a welcoming and helpful place. Even without direct from the center, I feel supported knowing there are other resources I can utilize to get the best grade possible.

AK Psi

On Wednesday, September 6th, I attended a meeting for a business fraternity for Alpha Kappa Psi. I met a lot of people with knowledge about many different fields. It was very interesting to learn about different people and their paths to get where they were now.

WBMB Radio Club

When initially walking into the WBMB Radio Club room, I could feel the lively and energetic vibe. I wanted to be part of this club for the particular vibe I felt in the room. I might the leaders of each department including Marketing, Music and Human Resource. I was particularly interested in marketing and graphic design, even though I am still interested in other aspects of the club like music playlist and sound engineering. The interview session did make me feel nervous, but it was nice to meet with the head of the Marketing department and discuss the work that this department entailed. Specifically, I have had some background experience in graphic design from my internship at Oath this summer. So, I was also able to talk about my previous works. I plan on getting heavily involved in the WBMB by using my Marketing, technical, film and photoshop skills. I want to be able to represent the club in the best light possible. This can increase ratings, views and awareness of the club to other students who want to join. I would also like to participate in live events in and out of the school. All departments of the club are interdependent and have to collaborate together to be successful.

During the meeting itself, I was able to meet other students as well. I am looking forward to building a closely connected community with the club, if I am able to proceed. We also learn Ned about the exterior community the radio station reaches and the opportunities we have in order to expand our involvement like having our own show segment within the station. I also plan on taking my own initiative to add my one creativity to the radio station, even through an original show or the incorporation of my own music taste. During the meeting, it was amazing to see  the technology, sound  and engineering work together to produce the music we hear. Everyone was very lively and open to ideas and new members to the club, which made me feel welcome. I believe that their music brings the Baruch community together. The WBMB Radio club is an integral part to the Baruch community and events, which I would love to be a part of.

Absolute Adrenaline

On Thursday during club hours, I went to the general interest meeting for Absolute Adrenaline after seeing a post about it in a Facebook group. After we all took our seats, we started by doing an icebreaker in which students said an adjective and their first name while doing a gesture. After the icebreaker, the treasurer, secretary and president (pictured) of Absolute Adrenaline introduced themselves. We then played chief, a game where everyone stands in a circle and copy the actions of one person, there is one person who doesn’t know who the leader is and they try to figure out who is the leader. After the icebreaker and game, we took our seats again for the presentation. The presentation showed pictures of the original Absolute Adrenaline, trips the the group went on, and events that they held. The trips included, paintball, hiking, kayaking, and skiing/snowboarding. The events including dodgeball, archery, indoor rock climbing, laser tag, and dodgeball have big turnouts. The group also plays games during club hours. We also learned about how the group is very community oriented and centered around friendship, it is a group for people who like physical activity, and that safety, teamwork, and organisation are important to this group. Overall, I think it is a great club and look forward to being a part of it. I spoke to the president of the group, George (pictured) to learn more about the club.

Alpha Kappa Psi ΑΚΨ

On Wednesday September 6,2017 I attended a general meeting for Alpha Kappa Psi, which is a business fraternity here at Baruch College. A K Psi provided dumplings and soda to everyone who came. There were four speakers who had already graduated from Baruch who were a part of this fraternity, Vincent Li of the charter class, Min Jee Choi of the alpha class, Gavin Li of the gamma class, and Sotiria Zouroudis of the delta class. They each gave informative speeches and answered many of our questions. Each of them told us their stories with AK Psi and their current careers and occupations. This meeting opened me up to many different things since the questions asked were really informative.

Gaming Club

I had a fun experience attending my first club at Baruch. I decided on attending the gaming club. It was so nice bright as it was colored in bright green. You couldn’t possibly miss the room, that’s how bright it was. Seeing such an enthusiastic group in there made me feel so comfortable. Everyone seemed as if they were having fun.

Attending this event was a good decision that I made because it helped me become more familiar to the school. Everyone in there was so friendly helping me around and giving me advices. I had a kid explain to me how likely my next four years at Baruch will be. He related to me and gave me couple advices that I should note. That helped a lot because I had someone look out for me.

I also learned how to play pool. It was so fun and cool as it was my first time ever playing it. I always seen the game going on tv but I had yet given it a try. At first I was awful vas you would expect because it was my first attempt, but the people in there were so nice and taught me how to play and the tricks of the game.

They also taught me about more clubs that’s available and the sports teams because I’m a big fan of sports. Now I know where to go to access when Baruch’s teams will play. I will definately attend several games if I have the time to support my school. I definately advise everyone to attend the gaming club. It’s such a nice vibe.

Latinx Heritage Month Opening Ceremony

Today, Thursday, September 7, 2017, I attended the opening ceremony for this year’s Latinx Heritage Month at Baruch College. This event, which took place on the second floor of the Newman Vertical Campus, was an excellent opportunity to meet and connect with members of student organizations here at Baruch College. There were many members of the Latin community dancing to cultural music in the center of the lobby. However, there was also a lot of people from different backgrounds dancing and celebrating as well. It was quite remarkable to see not only many people celebrating their own culture, but to see an overwhelming amount of people taking part as well. It made me realize that because we are in the heart of New York City, Baruch College is a school that encourages and celebrates diversity.

This event also gave students such as myself a chance to learn about and ask questions regarding the different Latino student organizations located here on the Baruch campus. Clubs like the Ecuadorian Club, The Dominican Student Association, Latin American Student Organization, and Mexiculture all provide opportunities for Latin students at Baruch opportunities to immerse themselves in their culture. They also give other students the opportunity to learn about cultures they are not familiar with.

In order to get involved in this celebration of culture, I plan to participate in cultural clubs and organizations of all different types. There are many of these clubs on the Baruch campus, and it is the perfect chance to become more familiar with not just Latin culture but others as well. I also plan on visiting other Heritage Month celebrations. I feel that doing this will establish a connection between me and others that I meet. I feel that in order to truly know a person, you have to know what kind of background they are coming from, Heritage Month events provide you the opportunity to learn of these backgrounds.

Joining a New Club!

During my first two weeks here at Baruch, I decided to become more involved in clubs and organizations as a way in which to meet new people and learn new things. While I signed up for a variety of different groups this last week, the one that I’ve visited the most frequently is Hillel, a Jewish-based organization that meets on the 3rd floor of the Vertical Campus. While I was admittedly skeptical at first to join a faith-based organization, I was very immediately surprised by the kindness and camaraderie I saw, in addition to how welcome their group is to new members. Everyone that I was able to meet were not only hilarious but caring and respectful to all that was around them. Throughout the two weeks, I was invited to an abundance of events that they had put on. With activities ranging from simple discussions, to evenings out in the city, to large luncheons in their headquarters, there was never a shortages of good times to be found. Highlights of my experience with Hillel thus far have simply been coming in between classes to talk to people over a cup of coffee, as pictured in one of the images above. Also shown is a screenshot of a text exchange between the leader of the group and I starting a discussion on hosting a religious dinner on an upcoming Friday evening in the dormitory. Within the Hillel, there are a variety of clubs that I also developed an interest in, including AEPi (a service-based fraternity), First Lex Capital (an investment agency run by students), Tamid (a business club that works with Israeli-based startups), etc. It’s my intention, in conclusion, to participate actively in all of these clubs available to me, in addition to being a part of Hillel as a whole.

Embracing my Jewish side

One of the clubs here at Baruch that I’ve been visiting the past few days is Hillel. Hillel is a club for (but not limited to) Jewish people. Since I’m technically part Jewish, I figured I’d drop by and see what it’s all about.

When I got there I was greeted by a bunch of people, some freshman most upperclassmen. They were sitting and talking while watching tennis. Immediately I realized this is something I could do. While there I mingled with some cool people. While I’m still not exactly sure what the central focus or purpose of the group really is, it was a cool vibe and a nice environment. It seems like a good tool to meet people and almost a warm up for other clubs I’ll eventually get into at Baruch. I can definitely see myself dropping by again in the future.

For my Fro enrichment activity, I chose to go to an Alpha Kappa Psi meeting with a few of my friends. Alpha Kappa Psi is a business Fraternity, so at the meeting, there were four alumni speakers who were pretty diverse as they all had different occupations and graduated at different times from different majors. This allowed for more varying answers to the questions they were asked. After the speakers finished they had an open Q/A session. At the end of the session, you had the chance to personally talk to the speakers, other alumni, and upperclassmen about their experiences and getting internships. Altogether I found it very helpful in going to this meeting.
