Today, Thursday, September 7, 2017, I attended the opening ceremony for this year’s Latinx Heritage Month at Baruch College. This event, which took place on the second floor of the Newman Vertical Campus, was an excellent opportunity to meet and connect with members of student organizations here at Baruch College. There were many members of the Latin community dancing to cultural music in the center of the lobby. However, there was also a lot of people from different backgrounds dancing and celebrating as well. It was quite remarkable to see not only many people celebrating their own culture, but to see an overwhelming amount of people taking part as well. It made me realize that because we are in the heart of New York City, Baruch College is a school that encourages and celebrates diversity.
This event also gave students such as myself a chance to learn about and ask questions regarding the different Latino student organizations located here on the Baruch campus. Clubs like the Ecuadorian Club, The Dominican Student Association, Latin American Student Organization, and Mexiculture all provide opportunities for Latin students at Baruch opportunities to immerse themselves in their culture. They also give other students the opportunity to learn about cultures they are not familiar with.
In order to get involved in this celebration of culture, I plan to participate in cultural clubs and organizations of all different types. There are many of these clubs on the Baruch campus, and it is the perfect chance to become more familiar with not just Latin culture but others as well. I also plan on visiting other Heritage Month celebrations. I feel that doing this will establish a connection between me and others that I meet. I feel that in order to truly know a person, you have to know what kind of background they are coming from, Heritage Month events provide you the opportunity to learn of these backgrounds.
This sounds pretty cool! Was unaware this was even going on, but it’s interesting how many clubs showed up and represented at this event.
