On Thursday, November 16th, I went to a Bystander Intervention training here at Baruch. The overall environment there was good and there was also free pizza at this event. The presentation was really well done and they gave us a pen that has facts of sexual harassment and assault as well as where to find help. The first thing we talked about was the definition of bystander. We also discussed different scenarios that could be presented in where someone could prevent a possible sexual assault or harassment from happening. Another thing we discussed were the three possible ways to prevent some sort of sexual assault or harassment from happening. They were to distract the perpetrator, delegate or tell someone else to defuse the situation or to directly get involved in the situation. Lastly, we were shown a short clip that was interesting. In this clip it shows how people could have intervened to stop sexual assault from happening to an unconscious woman. Above all, I highly recommend attending this event (if there is another event like this one in the future) because it teaches you mainly how to intervene in possible sexual assault scenarios.
