Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTC

Blog Post

For this weeks blog post I decided to keep it professional and head over to a museum. I visited the MET and checked out their section on the Hudson River School, which has been coined as Americas first artistic fraternity. The reason why I decided to look at this section is because, ever since my sophomore year of high school, I have been intrigued by the sublime and its effect on people, specifically artists and writers. These writers and artists have been so heavily influenced by the sublime, due to its supposed healing effects on the psyche. I wanted to experience this myself, while going to see paintings might not equate to what these men saw, I can try. What I came out with this is that these paintings had no real effect on me. I felt bored on levels comparable to my anthropology class where I knock out for the whole period. I wanna experience these things on my own, go into nature and jump off cliffs and sleep under the stars. Thats is what I took away from this visit.

T.E.A.M Baruch

I attended the information session for T.E.A.M Baruch.  I learned about all the different positions you can obtain and heard a little about what each person has learned and how they grew from being apart of the team.  It’s a long process to get in, but from what I heard it’ll be worth it in the end.  You build your character and leadership skills.  Every application is unique to the individual.  I’m considering joining, but I first have to figure out if I’m going to transfer next semester before I can commit to anything.  Baruch really isn’t for me.  I’m debating on transferring out to do my required credits and then come back for my major.  I haven’t really found anything for me here.  It was hard for me to get a picture, so here’s my failed attempt to, but everyone laughed and knew it was for Fro seminar.

STARR

For my blog post, I decided to have it be about a career workshop this time. I decided to head over to the office of STARR Career Development in Baruch. STARR helps students by preparing them for jobs and internships and careers. STARR provides career counseling, mock interviews, resume building and fairs for students to find jobs or internships. STARR even provides professional clothing for students who may need it. I was familiar with STARR because it helped me find my work study job. I now work at the Baruch Early Learning Center. I decided to go to the STARR office and show them my resume so that I can get advice on it. I always had a resume but it was never fully looked at by someone else. It was made based off of what I knew myself. So I wanted to take it to the office so that they can tell me what to fix for the future when I needed to hand out my resume. STARR helped me out a lot. They showed me what I needed to fix and what I had done right. I learned how to emphasize work that I have previously done in a right amount of words. It was vey helpful because resumes are very important because they highlight all that you have done which would help a person get further in life.

The Ticker

I joined the Ticker Club on Tuesday because I was interested in writing for our school newspaper. I’ve always enjoyed writing as a hobby so it will be good to put it to good use in a club and have other people read my writing. This piece that I’m writing now isn’t a good example of what I’ll be writing because this isn’t fun but I’ll be writing about science and business which I personally think is a bit more interesting than writing why I joined a school club.  I most likely won’t be able to write a whole lot of articles since I go to school and work full-time but perhaps after midterms are over I’ll have more opportunity to do so. I also hope I don’t have as many technical issues with the paper as I do with this blog because I thought this was posted on Wednesday but when I went to check it was missing so not one-hundred percent sure what happened there.

Anyways I think being a part of the school newspaper will be a helpful aspect of my school career because it’ll be nice to be a part of something bigger than myself in college. Our paper is really cool because of how professional it is at least compared to the school paper from my high school which was only one large sheet of paper, not a real paper paper like The Ticker. All the people I met at the paper were really nice and encouraging and I look forward to working on my writing with them and giving them interesting articles to post. I’m happy to have this new experience with Baruch and look forward to having my writing published.

Hillel Club

I recently got the opportunity to check out the Hillel club here at Baruch. I am Jewish but I was never really in touch with my roots. So I decided to check this club out. A man named Ilya introduced us to the club. He talked about all the different holidays such as Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot which ended today. We also got to eat some Jewish food and snacks that I remember my grandma making me when I was little. It was interesting to see the amount of Jewish culture that Baruch has. I did not expect for many people to be there but I was wrong. The guy Ilya had an interesting past. He mentioned his involvement in the Iraq War thirteen years ago and showed us various images of other soldiers in combat. It was more fun than I expected and I will probably see myself coming back here soon.

CPP

CPP, conversation partners program, is aimed at gaining experience in communicating across language barriers for both native and non-native speakers of English. I knew this program both by my English teacher and friend.
While reading the introduction of it, I was excited because I believe it will be a chance to know our school. At the same time, I can make friends. I am shy and warm up slowly to people. Normally, I didn’t start to talk to classmates until the end of the semester. It is not only because of personality but my English. I am not confident in my English. Therefore most of the time, I speak my mother tongue to my friends who are mostly Chinese. It’s always difficult for me to make friends with English Speakers because we share different culture and interests. We don’t have the same punch line, either. So I want to know what are their hobbies are and how their lives look like.
By attending the first meeting, I met my partner, Rina. She is a really nice junior who had answered me tons of questions about school and college life. I am so moved!

(They also offer several events)

Metropolitan Museum of Art

On October 10th, I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I had never been to this museum before and at first glance, I noticed how grand and well kept the museum looked. The interior was modern looking and spent about an hour just walking around and observing all the interesting pieces on display. My favorite display that I observed there was an ancient Greek sculpture of the goddess Athena because it looked so detailed and made me question how the Greeks were able to create these masterpieces hundreds of years ago. I learned about several Roman sculptures as well and how a lot of them are reworks of Greek sculptures.

Baruch Soccer Club- Frank Iacovano

On Thursday I went to an interest meeting for the Baruch Soccer Club. I went because a lot of my teammates said it was a fun club to join. This club is for anyone who is interested in soccer or anyone that wants to learn more about the sport. The events include soccer tournaments, trivia and different soccer related movie viewings. I had a good time at the first meeting, and I got a soccer ball because I won the juggling contest. This is a picture of me and the Vice President of the club, Victor Torres. Who also happens to be the goalkeeper for the Baruch Soccer team.

MET the museum

One a few Fridays ago, my friends and I decided to begin our journey towards the Metropolitan Museum. As a freshman at Baruch, I once again scheduled the Global Studies. Being in this class, students must complete at least 2 museum visits and reports throughout the course of the semester. Setting on the idea for early preparation, we step into the uptown 6 train station and took the train to 77 Street. We got a bit lost in the beginning but everything worked out in the end with our great sense of direction. Arriving at the museum, we visited two sites: The Mesopotamia and Ancient China Civilization. I have to admit that although this isn’t my first visit, I still discovered new things. And I also learned that if time travel is ever applicable in the near future that I got to be careful about the time period that I travel back to. We explored around the museum for approximately 4 hours before we, girls decided to end our adventure and head back to our good old comfy homes. The trip was ok, in my opinion. This was probably due to the fact that I went with a narrow perspective, looking specifically for ancient civilization artifacts rather than just enjoying myself. I really recommend the Metropolitan Museum of Art for those who like to learn history visually. The museum is really big and offers a wide variety of galleries, extremely convenient to examine legacies from different regions and eras.

Here a few pictures of the MET from the outside. From the pictures, you catch a glimpse of the beautiful fountain built right outside the MET entrance.

Also a reminder: You must purchase tickets to enter the exhibitions. You can give as much as you like but you must give an amount > 0.

Visit at the Club Fair

My visit at the fair was quite an interesting one. Before going there, I thought it was going to be boring and a waste of time however, once I walked in, I was stunned with amazement. So many different clubs and so much diversity. My first stop was the japan club because I visited a Japanese festival in the summer and I got hooked on there food and there culture. Walking around, I ended up at the adrenaline club. The club members told me that they do various outdoor activities like paintball, rock climbing, etc. I went over to the Hong Kong club and immediately I was met with stares. After I talked to them a bit they were actually very friendly. During my visit the LGBTQ club was kind enough to pass out condoms, unfortunately the brand was a very trustworthy one. Throughout my entire visit, I

was very pleased with not only the clubs but the DJ as well. The music that they played was very exhilarating and made the visit more enjoyable.
