Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DTD

academic blog- starr workshop

Today me i attended a starr career workshop. It was about helping people find jobs and how to find and pursue a job we want to do in life and how to connect to others and how those connects could help us in the future.

The workshop i attended was Job search techniques which was taught by sandra kubrat, one of the many people that work at starr and that could help you at walk in hours or scheduled meetings.

The workshop told us about how to take mock interviews and tests online on the starr site to see what we were compatible with and what jobs were possibly suitable and or interesting to us.

Sandra spoke about how any job experience is beneficial when applying to jobs and or speaking at interviews every job has its own experience and difficulties learning it and managing it, all the skills you learn will help you in your future jobs you just don’t know it yet.

Sandra also spoke about how connections play a massive part in getting a job. She said it was easier to get a job through family or friends connections that it is getting one through online applications. Sandra told us about how to find connections with baruch alumni and how they could help us find jobs if they reply to you. Sandra also told us about information sessions you could attend to that are offered to by large companies and how they could inspire you to apply to that job or work in that field. They could also help you in establishing connections with that said company and they might become interested in you and offer you positions as an intern later.

Overall the workshop was very informational and showed me that you have to be persistent and want to get out there and make those connections with those around me so that i could succeed in life.

Visiting the 9/11 Memorial

When visiting the 9/11 memorial for the first time,I was expecting a regular bland memorial like most. But once i got to the south fountain and experiencing such wonderful architecture and planning put in to commemorate the victims off the attacks and helping the victims family remember the ones they lost. The memorial showed me a new side of New York that i never seen before. A place that people could remorse and remember the past. New York usually being a tough place that shows no emotion, the memorial opens a new side of New York and its people. Showing that we care what happens to us and that we won’t stand for it, showing that we care for the fallen victims and their hurt families, by building this memorial in their name and showing that we care. Many people visit the memorial and many people being at the memorial when i went. People who didn’t have any victims of the attack and people who did all getting together because they care about it and the history of New York. Seeing that everyone pulled through and manage to get through the tragic event. The memorial also reminded me to live life to the fullest and always be ready for the unexpected. It also showed to me to continue in life to become successful enough to be also remembered and remembered for things that i will accomplish in my life and continue with it. All this is going to make me progress and try my hardest in school and life to become successful.

Joining the E-Sports club

My first activity was to join a club and what better club for me was the E-Sports club. The second i entered the club room i knew this was the place for me. Everybody had the same interests as me and were very welcoming and interactive and eager to speak about their own interests. Once we started to meat the club President and other members from the club they were very welcoming and seemed to show a lot of enthusiasm for everybody to join, and try out for their competitive teams.

Once the president showed us how competitive the club was it was overwhelming. Their club members won 20,000$ from a past tournament in an online game and everybody was very good at the games they played. They all seemed to be very strict with how they would recruit members to join the competitive teams and help them succeed in tournaments and play well. However they also reassured us that there is a casual side to the club where u can come in and hang out with other members and causally play games and get better with them overtime.

The club seemed like a lot of fun to improve on my gaming and to make new friends that have the same taste as me. The club president also told us that they were setting up a part of the library that would be reserved to the club members so they could play games on their free time and enjoying playing games with other members. The club itself was very organised and strict with recruitment policies for teams and had many branches to the club to make it all work together and had helpful and friends members all around. I personally won’t join any of their competitive team because i’m not good enough yet but i will most likely be part of the regular club activities.
