Blog Post #3-Career workshop

So today I went to a career workshop where there guest speakers. Some of these guest speakers were people who currently work at the United Nations and they were talking about the different ways that we could get jobs in the future and more specifically, get jobs at the U.N. One of the men who spoke is a Diplomat from the European Union at the U.N who represents Denmark. His advice was that it would be best to travel over seas, get internships with organizations that aid different countries around the world and to make sure that those organizations are outside of New York and The United States and to learn as many languages as we can. He also said that it is very important to have your government of origin support you because a lot of lobbying goes on. He told about when he had an intern working for him and how his intern got a full-time job because he knew someone in government and they mad some phone calls on his behalf. The man on the left is the Diplomat from Denmark who came in today to give us some words of wisdom for our futures.

Blog #2-Academic:Guggenheim

Today I went to the Guggenheim Museum with my sister and her boyfriend. While we were there we saw various different exhibitions. One thing that really stood out to me was the sculpture that was hanging down from the ceiling made by a Chinese artist. Another exhibition that we visited was Rose+Croix which was a display of many different artists from France and Germany, to name a few. All of the pieces of artwork showed many different kids of emotions. One in particular, a women ironing,  caught the attention of me and my sister. She said that the women in the painting was hardworking and admitted she was probably tired, but she was happy to be there because she was working for her family. She specifically said, “Look at the slight smile on her face, artists don’t do that on accident.” I thought the painting the showed that the women was tired and she was drained from ironing, a job that she had to do everyday. I thought she was probably a servant. I said to my sister, “Look at the grey color in the painting and the brush strokes. Also look at her body language-she’s slumped over and tired and looks like she is sick honestly. She’s clearly tired and overworked and drained from what she’s doing.”

Another one that my sister and I had a lot to say about was a painting of a women with snakes coming out of her head and in between her breasts. The explanation of the photo said that the artist wanted to show that women are powerful, which during the time of the painting they were seen as almost equal to animals. This painting showed that women could be in control and demanding. This was shown because the women painted from a higher point of view and the viewers looking up to her.

Fro blog post 1-Student Life

It was Convocation day during the Club Carnival and I already knew that I wanted to join a club, I just didn’t know which one to join. I was walking around looking at all the club’s tables and reading their pamphlets when a guy carrying three boxes of pizza asked me if I wanted some pizza, I of course said yes and he said all I have to do is join Hillel. At that point I did not know what Hillel was, but if free pizza was involved I know I wanted in. I followed him to the room to eat the pizza and that is where I saw a whole bunch of people wearing Yarmulkes, and I thought to myself, “okay this is interesting” So I stayed there and listened to what they had to say and I found out that Hillel is the center of Jewish culture here at Baruch. I am not Jewish and neither were some of the other students in the room, but that was okay they told me because they want more people to join, they are accepting of everyone. I found it very interesting so I decided to stick with the club to see what it has to offer. Since then I have gone to two meetings and it has been a lot of fun. I found out that they have different little clubs within this one club and they are very diverse in what they do, for example, they have a club called BOSS which is a primarily Russian club for Russian students, but of course they encourage everyone to join. They are very involved with the different school activities and cultural activities which I also found interesting because I love to learn things about different cultures and different people and I feel that it falls very well with me because I am an International Business major and I will be interacting with many different people from around the world.
