Starr Career Workshop- Cover Letters and Other Business Correspondence

Last Tuesday, I decided to go to a career workshop named Cover Letters and Other Business Correspondence. It was an interesting experience to meet new people that want to learn how to make a cover letter. At first, I thought making a cover letter was easy but I was so wrong. It has a lot of processes to make one. Ricki Weitzen, our advisor, with her assistant gave us tips and a worksheet to understand how to make a cover letter. For the next two hours, Ms. Weitzen gave us a presentation on how to make a cover letter.

First, she asked the audience some true or false questions to test our knowledge about cover letters. This is when I learn some new information about cover letters. I learned that a cover letter should not be so colorful and creative at all. The recruiters want to learn your experiences, internship, or any voluntary/leadership positions you took. A cover letter should be simple, nice and professional. Also, I learned that there are many different types of cover letter and you need to write a different cover letter for each different job opportunity. This will be so annoying to me. Then, the teacher taught us the necessary format on how to write a formal letter. There should be an introduction, a body paragraph describing how your previous work experiences will help you for this job, and a conclusion to give your email and phone number to the client. Also, she tells us tips on what to do and what to not do in a cover letter. After that, we looked over samples of the cover letter. to see what is the difference between an excellent cover letter, a mediocre cover letter, and a poor cover letter. I was assigned to a group by the instructor and my group discussed the requirements to make an amazing cover letter. Next, we presented it to the class and it was an interesting and curious experience. Finally, the workshop was over and everybody left. This workshop showed me that a cover letter is not something easy to make.

Metropolitan Art Museum – FRO Blog #2

Last Wednesday, I went to the Metropolitan Art Museum located on 82nd street. It was a twenty minute trip from Baruch. It was my first time going to the Metropolitan Art Museum. Usually, I don’t like to go to museums because I found them to be boring and a waste of time.  As I arrived there, the food prices are so expensive compared to Brooklyn. A hot dog costs three dollars around the Metropolitan Art Museum. After eating lunch, I bought my ticket for $1. As I traveled around the museum, there were a lot of interesting art about religion and Jesus in the beginning. The artworks look beautiful but it was not interesting for me. As I explored the museum, I saw very intriguing objects like dishes and pottery from the 1500s.  As I explored the museum, I realized that Metropolitan Art Museum has some interesting artworks and this was not a boring experience at all.

As I traveled around the museum, there were a couple of artworks that caught my interest work. One of the artworks was a silk carpet from the 1600s. It has an interesting picture of a couple of newborns kids touching a brown creature. This carpet was representing Giochi di Putti that Pope Leo commissioned.  Another exhibit I liked was the guns and armor. There were many guns and armors depicted in the museum. They were many different types of armors in the museum. One of my favorite museums was the Harquebusiers Armor of Pedro II because it was simpler and the color of the armor looks amazing. In the weapon exhibits, there were a lot of guns and bows. One of my favorite guns in the museum was the flintlock gun because it was portable and the design of the gun was different from most guns. There were a lot of colors for the bow and arrows but I was not interested in it. After that, I decided to go home because I needed to pick up my cousin around 3:30 p.m. I only have time to visit the first floor of the museum. Next time, I will visit the second and third floor of the museum.

FRO DTD Blog #1- E-Sports Assoication

On September 9th, I went to the general interest meeting for Baruch E-Sports Association with my friends. The meeting took place in room 4-180 in the Newman Vertical Campus. E-sports are multiplayer video games played competitively by professional players. Some examples of e-sports are League of Legends, CSGO, Dota, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. I went to the meeting because I want to meet other people who play the same games as me. Unfortunately, no one plays the same games as me.

In my first meeting, the president, Tiffany Yee, and the vice president, Feng Lan, introduced themselves to us. Then, they talked about League of Legend and CSGO, the two games Baruch sponsors. They spoke about having tryouts for those two games. It was unimportant to me because I don’t play CSGO or League of Legends. Next, the president talked about how our next meeting is in the computer lab. After that, the vice president talks about the accomplishments of the clubs. One of the accomplishment was that the Baruch’s CSGO team won first place in a tournament.  They have foods and drinks for us to eat for lunch. I was so hungry and ate my first slice of pizza quickly. During lunch, I talked to my friend, Marcus, about Nintendo games. I play a game called Super Smash Bros. 4 and Pokemon while my friend plays games on Steam and Pokemon. After lunch, the president asked, “Which games do we play?” Most people in the club play League of Legends and CSGO.  Then, we played an icebreaker to get to know each other. I talked with my friend’s friends. I learned that he likes to play a game called Overwatch. After the icebreaker, we took a group photo of each other. FInally, I decided to leave the meeting after the photo. I still don’t know what club I want to join. It was interesting but I don’t think this is the club for me.
