I attended the Portfolio Workshop this past week on Thursday. Although I did have my on LinkedIn account and made my own website and published it on GitHub, I was hoping to get some more information on buying a domain and getting my actual webpages on that domain. Unfortunately they went over stuff I already knew and did not help me as far as learning anything new. I knew most of the basics regarding html and css being taught and felt that I had wasted my time in terms helping me market myself to future employers. We didn’t even use html and css, but wix so that was kind of off putting for me. Fortunately, a friend of mine introduced me to an internship I could sign up for over winter break from Witny. I would have an paid internship with a tech company over winter break giving me a chance to build my resume in the future should I ever decide technology is something I’d like to pursue.

The Writing center: Helping you get the grade you always wanted
I would describe English as being one of my strongest classes. I have taken some of the hardest classes available in the subject and managed to get A’s. However, the first writing class I took at this school turned out to be something completely different than I was used to. I had studied poetry before, but I had not quite done things the way they were in class. The first writing assignment asked us to write about ourselves as if we were a poem. We were to describe and analyze different parts of our life. I felt confused and stuck throughout the time that I was drafting this essay. I had trouble articulating what I was meaning to say and writing my analysis of my self. Therefore, I decided to go to the writing center to possibly get some direction in terms of editing and what I would put in my essay. I went to the Newman Library on Wednesday at 1:00 for a short walk-in appointment. Since my writing was really short and I did not need 50 minutes of one on one time. I brought both a draft and the assignment sheeet printed out. I got some really interesting feedback there. They gave me pointers on how to make my analysis stronger and they even helped me refine my writing that made my essay more pleasant to read. I spent a total of 20 minutes there in the library. With the notes that I got from the writing center I felt better editing and eventually turning in my first paper. I had really high hopes for this essay because i had worked so hard on it, but I got an A-. I probably should have worked harder tbh.
Joining a club at Baruch
On Thursday September 7th, I walked in on some of the clubs set up in booths encouraging people to sign up. I just happened to come across a booth for the school newspaper called The Ticker. I thought that this would be something good for me to join because of my love of current events and writing. I spoke with two girls and signed up for an email list using a google form. In this form I put what I what be interested in doing be it editing or contributing to articles or pictures. I found it really easy and I even had the choice between what types of articles I would write. There where categories such as science, the arts, opinion etc. The possibilities were really endless and I found that comforting. I didn’t have to feel stuck doing one particular thing all the time or feeling that I had a small selection of topics that I could talk about. The girls there were really nice and seemed really interested in getting others to participate in writing for the newspaper. They clearly explained to me what the newspaper was about and how to actually contribute. I thought that was pretty cool and I look forward to learning more in the emails that I will receive and the different things I could choose to write about in articles. They even gave me a wristband and a lanyard. I look forward to receiving emails and possibly working on articles for the school. I had no idea that it would be this easy to join a student program in the school. However, in the future I would like to join a club that allowed me to meet up and be social with others. I am excited to see the rest of the clubs this month on the 28th.
