A career experience I had was an information event with Deloitte earlier in the semester . Deloitte is a huge accounting firm and a professional service network that provides audit, tax, consulting, enterprise risk and financial advisory services.  I was introduced to this event by a club a joined NABA or National Association of Black Accountants. The three Deloitte employees were all former Baruch students and they were all in NABA and many other clubs during their time at Baruch College. The three  alumni spoke to us extensively  on what they do at Deloitte as well as what we should do in Baruch if we also would like to land jobs after we graduate. They also educated us on proper etiquette at job fair and how we should  speak to professionals. They suggested that we get a professionals linkden if we have any questions and we should also take their card and contact them after. They emphasized that people who do this stand out of the crowd and catch the attention of the professional. They stressed proper attire to job fairs because first impressions are very important.  They also shared stories of how Deloitte has led to many different experiences and how they’ve traveled  because of their work. They also stressed that baruch prepares it’s students for these kind of jobs.

The Merchants House Museum was an interesting experience to say the least.  Upon entry I could tell that the house was very old. The four floor home housed furniture clothing and other items that the Treadwell family used when they lived in the Greenwich Village Home. The original 19th century furniture did seem to be in good condition which I found pretty impressive. At the beginning of the self guided tour I was sent into a coat room that had a coffin sitting in the middle. Inside of the coffin were instructions on how to take your very own “Post-Mortem” picture. I found this extremely creepy and considered leaving. This would only be the first of a many unnerving occurrences in the house. The museum had a Seabury Tredwell mannequin lying in the bedroom. I also couldn’t help but notice that my visit came during the time that  museum was doing a death and mourning exhibit so the central theme was how the family dealt with losing their loved ones. I thought the servants quarters were the most interesting room in the house. I visited that room last and I was a little disappointed. Throughout the house they described the hard labor the hard labor that the servants went through and I just felt they may have deserved a little better than to be cramped up in the attic in such a small room. Overall I found the entire experience unnerving. It was very disturbing especially because the death and mourning theme. I do not plan on ever going back and I would not recommend this museum to my friends or anyone for that matter.

NABA GIM

Hello my name is Peter Famuyide. I am a first year student here at Baruch.  I attended the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA)General Interest meeting and after attending the meeting I joined the club.  I was refered to the group by many of my older Baruch friends and they all said i woould not regret joining especially is i became involved. On my first day in the club i knew i was going to like it. I liked how the members of this club bonded whether it be in the club room or whenever we saw each other in the school. I have gone out to lunch with many of the memebers of these groups to lunch and they are very welcoming. As a new member they gave me the opportunity to attend NABA’s Eastern Regional Student Conference in October. This conference would help network me with some of the biggest accounting firms on the east coast and gives many chances to score jobs and internships as well as build relationships with CEOs and other important people in the business world. Not only did they give me this amazing opportunity but they also offered to make it an all expenses paid trip. Inside of the Genera Interest meeting they spoke to me about the importance of their motto “lifting as we climb”. They spoke on how they help students build business skills as well as network at many conferences. My favorite part of the General interest meeting was the  free food. They had an entire buffet spread of many different foods that I enjoy. My favorite would have to be the Macaroni and Cheese it was surprisingly good. I look  forward to spending more time with NABA members  and i will definitely be spending alot of time in that club room.
