Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DWC

Blog Post #3 Student Life

Not many clubs took caught my attention; however two clubs did just that. The Archery Club and Bio-Med club-I think- are two very fun and interesting clubs offered at Baruch. There was a practice session on Saturday for the Archery club and last Thursday there was a suture session in the Bio Med Club. The theme of the BIO MED club changes every week in order to keep it interesting and cover a wide variety of topics. The way I heard about the Bio Med Club was through my lab instructor and then also through Jennifer in the Natural Sciences department.  The Archery club appears to only hold practices on Saturdays so for some people that may be a turn off, however they do have a whole auxiliary gym to themselves to shoot around in and it’s a very cool addition to Baruch. Myself focusing on being a BIO major I found that it was hard to find a club that was not business related in a business school so it took me a while to settle in. But once I heard about some clubs through my professors instead of through emails I found myself going to those more often than others. I am ususally busy on Thursdays but when I get the chance to go I like to go to the Bio Med club since they provide food and drinks and also promote a relaxed environment-kind of like a lab class-. I highly recommend some people interested in majoring in a science to check out the BIO MED club.

Blog Post #2- Career

I visited the club fair and was interested in how many different clubs there were at Baruch. Many offered internships after the Junior year and helped set up an individual for future success like the Trader’s Club. I found myself interested in KIWANIS and archery club as well as TEAM Baruch and LEXICON. Kiwanis stood out because it is similar to a community outreach program but it help develop you as a person as well and your resume. My friend from high school ran KEY CLUB and told me to take a look into KIWANIS in Baruch and I look forward to attending their meetings and community outreach events and hopefully making a name for myself in the club. As for archery I though it was cool that the school had the space to set up its own archery range for students to learn to shoot a bow or just shoot a bow for fun if they already have experience. They also don’t require you to have your own bow which is really helpful as those can go for a lot of money, like four hundred to five hundred dollars for competition bows. The Trader’s club and the business clubs at Baruch definitely seem to be the most developed and connected to internships and jobs however, myself as an intended BIO major I look forward to the BIO Club which helps students connect to research opportunities and internships at labs.  In summation, the club fair had a good turnout and i’m glad I went and was able to find something to my liking.

Blog Post #1- Academic

On September 1st I visited one of the best museums in NYC, the MET, or Metropolitan Museum of Art. It has been a while since I visited this museum and I did not remember much of it. Sadly, I was not able to complete the whole thing in just one day. Monet’s paintings alone took up nearly an hour! I did however make my way through a decent amount of exhibits, including a beautiful Cristobal de Villalpando selection (shown below), as well as Comme de Garcon’s fashion showing. These three exhibits stood out the most because of Monet’s beauty, the size of Cristobal’s paintings, and the abstractness of Garcon’s fashion line. Monet’s paintings while appearing to have no definitive lines still show every single detail inside the canvas. Cristobal’s painting, ” Moses and the Brazen Serpent and the Transfiguration of Jesus,” is a 28 foot tall canvas encapsulating two biblical events in one transitioning piece, truly breathtaking. As for Garcon’s fashion line, it was very interesting but I guess I do not understand her take on fashion art pieces. They were very abstract to say the least but gather quite a large crowd inside the exhibit.

The reason I like the MET is because  even after a prolonged period of absence, exhibits such as Medieval Knights remain a center-piece of the museum. This brings me a nostalgic feeling allowing me to recollect past memories when I used to visit the same exhibits with my relatives almost a decade ago. I enjoyed this academic experience, being able to (without any cost) experience and learn about contemporary as well as past art and compare the two in a single day. To anyone hesitant about visiting this jewel of NYC, take the 6 train to 77th street and see for yourself, I guarantee you will find at least one piece inside the museum that you will love.
