Freshman Seminar Fall 17 DWC

Blog Post #3 – Career

Today I visited the Starr Career Development Center. I went because after our freshman seminar class, I thought that I needed help choosing a career path to go down. Immediately as I walked into the room on the second floor, I was approached by a young man asking me if I needed any help. I told him that I was just hoping to talk to someone about choosing a potential career path. He said that I would have to reserve a meeting with an advisor online through Starr Search. As I walked out of the Starr Career Development Center a lot of thoughts were going through my head. I though to myself “do I really need help figuring out a career path, right now?” I am in the middle of my first semester as a college student, and I am only taking four different subjects. None of the subjects I am taking right now even interest me, so of course I am having a hard time figuring out what I want to do. I am not sold on a specific field, so that makes things a little more difficult. I realized that I need to take my time and wait until I have a couple of more semesters under my belt taking classes that I enjoy, and that will lead to a more focused idea of what I want to do with my life, regarding a career. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Blog Post #2 – Student Life

Today, I visited the Baruch Hillel. It was a pretty cool experience because we are currently in the midst of a Jewish holiday (Sukkot). During this holiday, all Jewish people (open to everyone!) are supposed to eat in this structure known as the Sukkah. The Baruch Hillel’s Sukkah looked similar to a tent, with four walls and some tables and chairs inside to eat on. The top of the Sukkah is supposed to be covered with some sort of raw, unfinished vegetable matter. The most common roof coverings for a Sukkah are long bamboo poles, Evergreen branches, and unfinished wood. These are all acceptable elements to put on for the roof of a Sukkah. At the Sukkah, located on the eighth floor, there were a bunch of people. There was a ton of free food, and I assume that is why most of the people were there, but either way, it was cool to see. There were Jews and non Jews both inside and outside the Sukkah, participating in the college wide opportunity. It is a beautiful thing to see people of all different faiths and interests come together and enjoy something so simple. Unfortunately, I missed the food because I was stuck directing a sheep’s heart for a bio lab, but I am hoping to get food tomorrow (10/11) before our class meets.

On Tuesday, September 12th, I visited the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site. Honestly, I would not suggest going to this museum, unless you have a serious passion for our past presidents or Teddy Roosevelt himself. I was a little disappointed with the museum because I thought I would be able to take a selfie in the bedroom that Teddy grew up in, but that exhibit was closed off. One of the cool things that I was able to learn about our former president was that he apparently loved drawing cartoons. One of the exhibits had a bunch of cartoons that were drawn by Teddy himself. Anyways, if you have any interest in Teddy Roosevelt, I suggest going to this museum. If you couldn’t care less about the president, then definitely do not go there.
