Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CMA

Baruch Voices

I attended Baruch Voices because I thought it would be nice to hear from the other freshmen and learn about their experiences and their monologues. It was really cool to hear the voices of other students. Many of them share the same struggles as I do in college, so it was kind of comforting hearing that. People were really creative with their monologues. I was like wow. For example, one person talked about their life and then at the end it was really just a SpongeBob episode and he just told it from his point of view. Some of them were also emotional. Someone spoke about being bullied in school for being muslim. He spoke about how racism affected him all the time. This was a great event and I’m glad I went. I just went to pass the time and to have something to write about but I’m glad I stayed.

Internship Seminar

Today I went to the Internship Seminar in Room 2-190 on the Vertical Campus. It was actually really helpful. Michael Kalish, who was the presenter, taught us about the different kinds of internships and how to get one. What I found especially helpful was when he spoke about how to make a resume and what to put and what not to put on a resume. He gave some points on what looks good and acceptable and professional. He pointed out to us what kind of words we should use to build our resume and that we should try for our resume to be only one page. He said that extra curriculars would be important on a resume now, especially if you don’t have a lot of working experience. He also went over how to interview with an employer, and what to say to help ourselves stand out in a good way. Michael also gave pointers on what not to say during interviews. For example, he said that when an interviewer asks for our greatest weakness, then we should actually say a weakness and how we’re working on it, rather than say a weakness that’s really a strength. He also gave a heads up on what employers might ask to knock us off our game by asking a question whose answer we probably didn’t rehearse. At the end of the seminar Michael shared some resources that we could use to help us with the resume and finding internships and finding information about companies. This seminar was really helpful to me. There was a lot of useful information and it provided a lot of clarity for me.

Trip to the MoMA

For the first time, I went to the Modern Museum of Art. There, I saw really cool artwork, such as Robert Rauschenberg’s Mud Muse, which looked like a huge swimming pool of bubbling mud. What was making the mud bubble were pumps beneath the mud that was pumping air according to the frequency of whatever music was playing. I also got to see the works of famous artists such as Vincent van Gough’s The Starry Night, and a few of Frieda Kahlo’s works. It was nice to see artwork that’s I’ve only heard about and seen picture of in real life.

There were also a lot of other beautiful and powerful pieces that I saw. I was interested to see that there were also film series on display, because I didn’t know that the Museum displayed that. I loved being surrounded by art and taking it all in. Even though I didn’t understand all of the pieces, I still thought a lot of them were beautiful. Going to the MoMA makes me see that anything can be art, and that there is beauty in anything.
