Freshman Seminar Fall 17 CMA

SACC Tutoring Session

After missing an important calculus lesson, only two weeks before the final, I found myself struggling to catch up with the rest of the class. I tried watching videos on YouTube but that didn’t really help much. My favorite form of learning is actually seeing someone teach a lesson in person. I decided to schedule an appointment at the SACC tutoring center to help me catch up with the curriculum. This decision is probably one of the best decisions I’ve made while attending Baruch College.

The appointment scheduling process was simple and fast. I was lucky to get a spot since most of them were filling up due to finals week. I can now see why there is such a high demand for tutoring sessions.

Upon arrival, I was appointed to Kimberly who was very knowledgeable with multiple forms of math. When I scheduled the appointment, the website told me this was a group session. However, it felt more like a one on one session since Kimberly was so good at handling each of our needs. She went over the lesson I missed very quickly, yet it felt super effective. In class I felt like I missed a challenging topic, but at SACC everything seemed easier. Under Kimberly’s tutelage I was able to understand the topic and catch up with the rest of my calculus class. I definitely would recommend the SACC tutoring center to anyone who has missed a lesson or is struggling in class. I will keep this resource in the back of my mind if I ever need to use it again in the future.

Internship Seminar: Preparation For The Future

I set a goal for myself, before coming to Baruch, to obtain a business oriented Summer internship during the Summer of 2018. However, I felt like there was a lot of things I had yet to know about internships. Thus, I attended the Internship Seminar by the STARR Career and Development Center.

The workshop, run by Michael Kalish, was very informative. The topics covered were designed to help us find internships that we would enjoy. Michael did a great job of keeping the topics interesting and informative at the same time. This did not feel like a workshop that I was forced to attend, it felt like a class that I specifically chose to take.

During the workshop there were several new things that I learned about internships that I never would have thought existed. The zero credit internship course was the most interesting topic in my opinion. It applies to students who have less than 28 credits and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Since a lot of students could not take credited internships due to a lack of credits, the zero credit internship course changes that. It also applies to me since I would have less than 28 credits and hopefully a GPA of 3.0+ when looking for Summer Internships.

Michael also made sure that we can capitalize on free workshops/fairs/programs etc. by telling us about important dates for workshops and showing us how to effectively use STARR search. In addition to STARR search, he also gave us plenty of other safe websites we can use to find internships for ourselves. I didn’t know that every student receives one mock interview per semester, which can be such a useful tool when prepping for a major interview.

Overall, attending this workshop made me realize that a lot of the resources and life skills we need to succeed can be found outside of the classrooms.

Club Fair

After a long month of rejecting Baruch’s friendly environment, (mainly due to the reason that all my friends left NYC for college) I decided to stop being a lone wolf and attend one of Baruch’s many club fairs. It was my first time visiting the levels past the first floor (I was so dedicated on hating Baruch that I decided not to utilize the free fitness center). Upon entry to the gymnasium I was greeted with a blast of pop music and a cluster of fliers were shoved my way. An array of different tables, posters, and groups were all lined up along the walls of the gym. The music put everyone in a vibrant mood, and all the groups looked very approachable.

I took one lap around the gym to survey all the different types of clubs, and approached those that looked appealing to me. The first club that caught my eye was the Archery club, archery was something I had always wanted to try and this club had real bows with real arrows! That would probably explain the long line it had to put down your information and talk to the representatives. However, when I neared the front of the line I saw that the Archery club was set to meet on Saturdays and Sundays 6-9pm. This was upsetting to me because my weekends are normally reserved for chess which is much more important than my interest in archery.

Shortly after, I was just standing and chatting with a friend until I was approached by a representative from the anime club.

“Do you guys watch anime?”

“ummm… not really I only watch Dragon Ball Super.”

“Well that definitely counts as an Anime! You should check out our booth over there in the left corner. We meet on Thursdays in 9-117 at 12:40. We normally put on an anime and have free food, its just a fun time in general.”

She handed me two cards with more information regarding the anime club and in my head I was thinking “sure why not?” I decided to check to out the anime club this Thursday, maybe I’ll actually enjoy it and if I don’t I can find something new. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank.
