Freshman Seminar Fall 17 EWA

TEAM BARUCH MEETING

I went to the Team Baruch meeting 2 weeks ago. I went because I heard a lot about Team Baruch in my Fro class so I decided to check it out and see if I was interested in applying right now. The meeting was very interesting and a lot of people attended. I thought it was overall a very good opportunity but with the job I have right now and my work load I just knew it wasn’t for me currently. I would consider applying at a later time because it does seem like something I would want to do in the future.

A Visit to the Visual Arts Center

A couple friends and I decided to visit the School of Visual Arts not too far away from Baruch after our classes on Thursday. Finding it was a bit difficult but once we did we discovered that the school had an art exhibit in it with many art works as well as little descriptions on the sides. The art works were quite confusing to me because I wasn’t sure what was going on in them up until I read the description on the side which spoke of Shikumen which I had never heard of. “Shikumen came from the migration after the Small Swords Rebellion and the Taiping Revolution of 1853.” (Citing from one of the captions/descriptions for the artwork) It was a place that developed after rebellions and a war like state that started off very poor and then developed its own rich culture and built up from it. This place plays a very important role in Chinese history because of its background, development and new culture. Although all the art works presented seemed very chaotic, they did show a sort of beauty in the chaos that was going on and the war like state. The anarchy portrayed represents the freedom that those people were striving for and had finally reached when they formed Shikumen. I’m very glad I got to visit this Visual Arts center and view all of the Shikumen art as well as other pieces that had no relation to Shikumen but were very interesting, aesthetically pleasing and captivating to me. I think visiting this center was also very helpful considering I take art history and we are taught all about reading and analyzing art which I got to take into real life and try and utilize during this exhibit.

Alpha Club Resumé Making Session

I chose to go to the Resume making lecture presented by Alpha club as my against my will First Year Seminar assignment. Walking in there I expected a boring lecture on something I’ll never need in my life but it turned out to be anything but that. The presentation on how to build a resume and how to sell yourself to any future employer was actually very informative, helpful, and educational to me. I learned that little details need to be left out of it because the interviewer will most likely ask questions and I learned about the appropriate structure and format of a resume. The team that conducted the presentation also went over how to properly give a speech and present yourself which included being concise, formatting it in chronological order, taking your time, and connecting with the listener to have their full attention. I learned a lot from going to that club meeting and I think I can definitely be able to utilize the skills I learned from their power point presentation and speech in my every day life.
