First-Year Seminar FMA

Career workshop

I decided to come to Baruch for better education in order to get better career. Even though I am a freshman now, my final goal is successful career, and I think I should start learning and preparing for it. Therefore, I decided to attend the On Campus Recruiting Workshop.

On-campus recruitment is a special program that recruiters from many famous companies to interview students on campus such as EY, JP Morgan Chase, and Bank of America. Students can interview for internship and full-tine job. Full time job is only open to seniors and internship opportunities is open to juniors (some freshmen and sophomores may be considered.)

In the workshop, the instructor explained steps about the On-Campus Recruitment program very specifically and answered our questions. She went over resume, cover letters, interview skills, and OCR deadline policies. For resume, she told us it will be better to limit the resume to one page and the format of the resume is really important. Interview is the most important part for getting a job opportunity. I learned that research about the company and position before the interview is very important because it provides more information to answer the questions and show you are really care about this job and this company. Also, she told us show your confidence, but try to avoid arrogance. Try to make eye contact and stay calm during the interview. After the interview, it is better to send a Thank You note to the people you meet. In this workshop, it provides me many important information that I didn’t know before. It gives me a direction to prepare my internship in the future. Therefore, this workshop is very helpful even though I am not applying for On Campus Recruitment right now. It provides me more information on how to achieve my goal and my career.

On September 28, my friend had three hours gap so she asked me to go to museum with her. Then we decided to go to The Museum of Modern Art. We followed the google map so we took the R train and walked about fifteen minutes. After arrived the museum, we got confused on getting the ticket. We found out there are machines for getting the tickets which show $14 for students. However, we heard it’s free for students with CUNY ID. Therefore, we walked toward the help desks and asked about the ticket. The staff gave us two tickets from the machine with random picture on the back. The art works on the tickets caught my attention and I wonder what art works are in the museum.

We quickly walked toward the escalator, but the staff stopped me while she checked the tickets. She told me to put my backpack in the check room because it is too big. We started from the second floor first. There were a lot of art by Louise Bourgeois, but we were not interested on this type of art. Then, we headed to the fifth floor because we saw there were paintings and sculptures from the map. On fifth floor, there were more people but it was still very quiet. People were enjoying or taking photos with the art works. There were many colorful paintings which caught my attention. Each color is interacted with each other with irregular shapes. Some colors were contrasting but I felt comfortable when I was staring at the painting. There is a simplest painting by Piet Mondrian (Lozenge with Four and Gray). That is my favorite painting because it’s simple, but the caption didn’t explain too much about this painting.

The experience of visiting museum made me feel calm and relax because the museum is quiet and people were moving with slow motion. I think it is great to have CUNY id so I can visit more museums with free admission.

On the convocation day, I met the members of Alpha Phi Omega on the club fair. The name of the club attracted me at first. After I learn more about this club. I decided to join it. Alpha Phi Omega is a national co-educational service fraternity founded on the cardinal principles of leadership, friendship and service. I am interested in this club because I would like to do more community service and meet more friends. I think I feel happy and enjoyable of helping people and I like that feeling. I have joined the first GIM and the meeting of leadership and service. I met more members of Alpha Phi Omega. They are nice and lovely. I could feel they are like a big family and I would like to join into this big family. We made bracelets with strings for people during the meeting. I was glad that I could give out my help for people even though that was just a little help. Also, I learned the skill of making bracelets. I was very grateful that I had an opportunity for service.

Since Baruch College is a business school, almost every student comes here for business. I got a chance to do something different from business in this club. However, I think it still has something in common with business. We are doing things that helping people, helping the economy, and helping the world. It provides me opportunity to fulfill my life experience, friendship and leadership. Four years college, I should do more meaningful things to get the best memories and experience of my life. I would like to get involve with this club, to improve my leadership, friendship and service. There are so much work in college and I feel stressful sometime, I feel relax when I am in Alpha Phi Omega and participate in the events.
