Freshman Seminar Fall 17 FWB

Startup Businesses Fair

For my last blog post, I wanted to do something that has to do with my intended field of work since this workshop was based on .  Since I plan to move to Trinidad and startup business workshop.  The workshop worked out perfectly for me as it feel between the club hours and had no effect on my dreadful 2 hour commute. The workers was given by two people who are college graduates who work a lot with startup businesses. They were very helpful in giving us tools on how to start a business such as looking on how wide of a customer scope the company would have. They gave us different ways to search for different jobs in startup companies. They also gave us tips on how to get jobs in startups and the benefits of working at a startup company. One benefit that they gave me the benefits for, and something I might do for a little before I leave to Trinidad is that working in a startup, can lead to getting a high position once that company takes off. This can pay well, but also expand your network. I’m happy I attended this as it really help put me in the right direction of how to proceed for when I’m done with college.

For my second enrichment workshop I went to the American Museum of Natural History. I went to the Museum with classmate Enesi. I actually did this for an Anthropology project. For Anthropology we had to go to the museum and visit the hall of human origins. In the hall we had to make up a test on stuff that we deemed important on the hall. At first when assigned the project I sort of dreaded having to go to the museum. This was for two reasons. First off, Ive been there almost every year on a field trip with my summer camp as a kid. And second being that I already spend near four hours a day and nearly 6 dollars on mass transit and didn’t want to add to that.  Growing up in New York I am very familiar with the train systems and had no problem getting there. On a Thursday afternoon during club hours me and Enesi went. To get there we took the Forest Hills 71st ave  bound R train to 34th street Herald Square. From there we took the Bedford park bound B train to the 81st street which is conveniently named the American Museum of Natural History. In the Museum we spent ten minutes in line for security check. From there we proceeded to wait another 20 minutes in line to purchase tickets. Since we had a class later that evening we couldn’t waste time. As soon as we got our tickets we began to look for the Hall of Human Origins. After almost a ten minute journey trying to find the exhibit we were finally there Once in there we spent a grand total of five minutes in the exhibit, taking pictures of everything and planning to write our quiz questions later. It was hard passing all the interesting exhibits on dinosaurs, space, and even prehistoric times without being able to stop in for pictures as these places are constantly changing and adding new things. I feel like I would want to go back in the future on my on time, and just enjoy the museum for what it is.

Hillel Club

I chose the Hillel Club as my first of three enrichment work shops. I picked this club for a number of reasons. First off In high school I joined many cultural clubs to learn about other cultures. My mom has been employed by a Jewish non profit organization for almost the past twenty years. Through her and countless visits to her office and building strong relationships with her colleagues I have been exposed to much of the Jewish Culture. Since this I have almost an inexplicable interest in the Jewish culture. One reason I believe that I enjoy there culture is because although I’m not Muslim my late grandmother was, and their practices are very similar.

Hillel leads to great opportunities for all the students that have passed through there doors. They have Hebrew workshops, which are translated to English for all those who aren’t fluent. Another reason that Hillel gives great opportunity to its students, is because it is the largest Jewish Campus organization in the country. Extended in over five hundred countries, this creates a large network which would aid in students getting jobs and meeting new people all over the country.

Hillel also brings an interesting dynamic to Baruch. On Mondays they have twenty minute meetings in which the bring over pieces of Israel’s culture over to Baruch.

Although I’m not so personally interested into this next part, they do offer a group for Student from Russia, and those of Russian decent. I believe that this is a great opportunity for these students, because being a commuter school, It might be hard to make friends at Baruch, and this somewhat makes it easier for these students.

The Jewish Business leaders section of the club is also a part of my club that takes my interest. This is because the offer opportunities for workshops that help explore future careers, and event networking events to set you up with someone who has a job in your field of interest.
