Last Thursday me, Nick Valeriano and Nick Carino all went to the writing workshop to have a paper we were working on as a group. It was a paper that had to be 6-8 pages in length and the topic of the paper was to write about an observation we made while reading the book everybody comes to ricks and its film adaptation Casablanca. We wanted to go to the writing center because we were not sure how to connect all three of our short papers into one 6-8 page paper. We sat down with one of the writing advisors and she was very helpful and was able to show a few tricks on how to connect the three smaller papers. Not only did she help us with connecting the three smaller papers but she also pointed out some minor grammatical errors that we had in the papers. She also showed us where we could expand upon some of our ideas. This helped us meet the quota of 6-8 pages that was set by our professor. I thought that the writing center was extremely helpful and showed us what we needed to do in order to improve our paper to the level which it should be. If I had the chance to go again I most definitely would, the writing center and the people who worked there were very helpful. The writing center was definitely one of the most helpful resources I have used yet at Baruch.

Academic Workshop

For my academic workshop, I had to attend the museum of natural history on the upper west side here in manhattan. This was a part of my anthropology class assignment and came to be an exhilirating experiencee. Once i rrived there, i had to find the Hall of Human origins to learn about the evolution of the human species. There were so many new things i never realized about human evolution before this trip to the museum. I learned our natural traits and how we adapted to our planet over time.

Career Workshop

I attended the resume workshop, which helped me learn to create a professional and outstanding resume.  I was completely clueless before attending the workshop, but now i can say i have impressed myself with organizing all my work experience. I was a bit frustrated with creating it before hand, fearing i did not have enough experience and would have nothing to put down. After this vivid learning experience, I acknowledged skills i was not aware i had. The people at the workshop were very welcoming and helped me understand the essence of a good resume.

STARR – Career Workshop

Today for my final Baruch workshop I visited the STARR Career Development Center (SCDC). The SCDC is a very useful, free, on campus resource that can help you prepare for interviews, help you find internships, or just lend you suit if you need one! The SCDC is located on the 2nd floor in the Newman Vertical Campus in room 2-190. I visited the STARR center during its visiting hours so I could get help refining my resume. They gave me many great formatting tips and what kind of accomplishments should go on to it! Such as honor roll, community service, Eagle Scout and various other rewards recieved. As well as what kind of skills to put on to it, cooperation, patience, leadership skills, etc. The workshop really allowed me to figure out how to structure my resume for now as well as for the future additions to it! The STARR center does offer mock interviews at varying times if you need to get ready for an interview but you’re just not sure if faking one with a friend will all that helpful. And if you don’t own a suit, or yours is still in the wash, they can lend you an extra suit to usd (don’t worry it’s clean) when you need one in a rush. The STARR center is an amazing resource one should definitely take advantage of if their a Baruch student, no matter thr career path you wish to choose it will be able to help you, it’s what they do. The STARR center has walk in hours from 3PM to 4:30PM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and from 5PM to 6:30PM every other day. During the walk in hours they can give you Resume and Cover Letter help as well as a brief general consultation to help you with whatever questions you may have for them.

Startup Businesses Fair

For my last blog post, I wanted to do something that has to do with my intended field of work since this workshop was based on .  Since I plan to move to Trinidad and startup business workshop.  The workshop worked out perfectly for me as it feel between the club hours and had no effect on my dreadful 2 hour commute. The workers was given by two people who are college graduates who work a lot with startup businesses. They were very helpful in giving us tools on how to start a business such as looking on how wide of a customer scope the company would have. They gave us different ways to search for different jobs in startup companies. They also gave us tips on how to get jobs in startups and the benefits of working at a startup company. One benefit that they gave me the benefits for, and something I might do for a little before I leave to Trinidad is that working in a startup, can lead to getting a high position once that company takes off. This can pay well, but also expand your network. I’m happy I attended this as it really help put me in the right direction of how to proceed for when I’m done with college.

Major and Minors fair

For my last Blog post i went to the majors and minors fair. I am not really sure what i want to graduate on so i thought that going to this fair might be helpful.  I learned some new things that were kind of interesting at the fair. The Marxe school offers a major that i could see myself taking but they require a lot of math so that was a no go. I also saw some minors that looked fun. I love movies and i think i want to minor in film and the person that i spoke to at the both was very convincing. I also got to meet the mascot and he/she was a lot shorter than i thought he would be. I guess he/she took more after the cat side of his/her family.

Audre Wheeler – NYC Museum

For my Academic opportunity, instead of attending a workshop with the SACC Tutoring Center like I had planned, I went on an impromptu visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with one of my friends. I have been to the museum a multitude of times over my life but I never get tired of coming back. Since we have been so many times, my friend and I made it our mission to explore the exhibits of the museum we had never seen before. It was crazy to see art from people I have only heard about in my textbooks such as Rodin and Rembrandt van Rijn and artifacts from the time of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. My all time favorite exhibit has always been the Egyptian Art sections. Seeing the aged stone and wilting pages always makes me wonder about who first created these things. It baffles me how things from so long ago have stood the test of time just to be presented before me. It makes me wonder of how things interconnect throughout the universe and whether or not being remembered is better than being a memory. I had an amazing time wandering through the palatial halls for hours on end. After a while my friend had to force me to leave so we could get something to eat. I love the city that I’m from and the wonders within it. It was amazing to see all of the different artifacts and artwork from around the world and across time. Going to places like this truly makes me value the city where I live. Being in the cultural center of the world is a rare and amazing experience. Through this freshman seminar activity I have learned to value New York City and all it has to offer a little bit more.

STARR Development Center

I went to the STARR development center for my final blog post. There, I received a lot of help on my resume. I hadn’t really spent much time updating my resume since high school. Back then all I had on it were some clubs and scholarly awards. Now I have a job that I can add on and an internship. I had a very simple resume in high school, but at the development center I realized that this just wouldn’t cut it at Baruch. I had not been very specific about my accomplishments, it wasn’t organized correctly because it was more than one page, and I could have added many more achievements that I hadn’t even considered. At the STARR development center they showed me many tips to improve my resume. They taught me to bullet point under all the titles and to be very specific about my roles at each job and internship. They also told me explain what each award that I had mentioned was for. The STARR development center benefits anyone who is currently applying or thinking of applying to jobs and internships. Resumes are extremely important and if you want useful tips and tricks to make your resume the best it can be take advantage of their resources.

Career Development Building McCabe

On October 15, the STARR Career Development Center held an informational session during club hours exclusively open for first and second year students. The session gave the new Baruch students the opportunity to ask questions about expected internship timeframes and what we can be doing now to prep us for the most success possible in the future. After asking questions, the representatives gave out pamphlets that we could use to help us understand all that the career development search has to offer. They introduced a “Peers for Careers Program” that the students can use to help freshman start to understand how we should seek career advice. They have a program that is affiliated with TEAM Baruch that gives the students mentors that can individually guide each student. The mentors can help students to build resumes, help form thank you notes, interviews, LinkedIn profiles, and presentations to clubs. Joining the PEER program is a very useful tool that is offered to the Baruch students. In the pamphlet it says that companies that have hired peers graduates are Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, and Citigroup, etc. I have attached a picture of the pamphlet so that you all can get more insight on what the program is all about. Baruch has taught me that it is very important to establish a strong network. It is important that we put time away for events such as these because we are going to school in the hopes that we will get a good job upon graduation. I feel that all of the people in the office are trying to help each and everyone of us because they feel a sense of accomplishment when they see us succeed. I hope I can continue to use the resources that Baruch has for us in order to get the most out of my experience.

Audre Wheeler – Club

For my Student Life opportunity, I chose to join a student club or organization. At the beginning of the semester, I did not know exactly what I wanted to do. I went to a number of different club meetings, events, and fairs to figure out what I wanted to  be apart of. Finally I decided to join Baruch’s WBMB Radio Club. The application process for the club was a lot more than I was expecting. After filling out paper applications, each applicant was interviewed by the head of the club. It was a nerve wracking experience, as was the waiting for weeks to see if I had been selected. When I finally received my email welcoming me to the club, I was honestly ecstatic. Going to radio club is still the highlight of my week and it’s a place where I have made some great friends. I believe that if I had not put myself out there to join this club I would have been miserable here at Baruch. By taking a leap and putting myself out there I have met some really amazing people that I would not have had the opportunity to meet anywhere else. I think that joining a club or organization is something that every student should do. Whether or not you pursue it throughout your college career, joining a club or organization is a great way to meet people and figure out what you’re interested in. Baruch offers an amazing selection of clubs and organizations to be apart of so by letting the opportunity to get involved pass you by is only to disservice yourself. Being apart of the radio club will honestly be the highlight of my time here at Baruch and I’m glad to have been pushed towards the opportunity through this freshman seminar activity.
