Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC06

Blog #3

For the third blog post, I went to a workshop called “Small Talk: It’s a Big Deal!” with Tony on November 8. The reason why I chose this workshop because my first language was Chinese, I was poor conversation with others in English. We learned a lot in this workshop and it is very helpful to use in conversations, presentation or even interview in our life.

When we sat down, Ellen Stein came to everyone to sad hi, shaking hands and introduction herself with smiling. Next, we have small talk with each other to fill the name on the blanks in few questions. We knew each other during the small talk. In this workshop, I learned the ways to start conversations such as introduce yourself, ask a closed-ended question, make a positive light-hearted comment and offer a compliment followed by an easy to answer. Give a good impression is very important when we met a new friend. It is very important to remember his/her name, it remembered me that the first day we met in First Year Seminar class, we play the game to try remembering everyone name. We also talk something about the body language and tips for conversation in this workshop. If you have the close body language, it is very hard to talk with other. For example, crossed your arms, shake your head. Eye contact shows that you are listening and talking an interest in what is being said. Body language we should notice and show your power.

Second blog – student life – play: “Arden/Everywhere: The As You Like It Project”

For my student life blog, on Monday October 9th, I went to watch the play:“Arden/Everywhere: The As You Like It Project”. I decided to watch this play because I need to write the assignment on this show to my Theatre course. I knew this show runs October 8th to 28th in the Baruch Performing Arts Center and it only cost me 16 dollars as a student. The director Jessica Baumann finds the darker shades, as well as topical resonance, in another of shakespeare’s comedies,”As You Like It.” And this story of exiles in love and in conflict  becomes a meditation on immigrants and refugees today, and it is i multilingual cast that mixes amateurs with professionals. In fact, I watched one play call:”A streetcar Named Desire” by Anderson Deeann in St. Ann’s Warehouse before. I was not really like watching plays because i think it is very hard to get their meaning and boring. Compare to the movie, it is lack of battles scenes or romantic scenes. Thus, when I watched the play, i almost fall asleep, but in the performance, I could feel they all radiated confidence and energy as they told their stories in English, it movement sequences, in song.  At last, I serious finished watch this show. they all performed very well, it is full of non-verbal storytelling and music, it a great introduction to me who is unfamiliar with Shakespeare.

academic blog

For my first academic blog, I decided to The Met Cloisters, which is located on four acres overlooking the Hudson River in northern Manhattan’s Fort Tyron Park with my old friends , classmates and my high school teacher on last weekend. The Met Cloisters is the baruch of the Museum dedicated to the art, architecture and gardens of medieval Europe.

The Met cloisters was one of the most favorite museum I visited. On that day , we all met  at the 14th subway station and we took the 6 train transfer the A train to there. We walk through the Tyron garden between the subway stop and the entrance – a short walk really but full of flowers and very enjoyable. It’s beautifully, hilly, with a nice view of the Palisades, and the top notch museum is practically a bonus. In the museum, the art on the walls is also from all over Europe. Most of the tapestries are from the Nederland. Really cool: there is a whole room about the catching of the unicorn.

However, it was so close to the river, wandering through a medieval castle or the extensive gardens. It’s quiet. The Cloisters really does make me feel like I aren’t in New York City, with it’s medieval artwork and tapestries. In my opinion, everything about this place is soothing. We sat down on the the lawn, ate together and we share the new things in the college.

I love this museum, enjoy the nature there.  I will be back next time and I hope I could go there with my new college friends and classmates. We could have a picnic and play games there.
