Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC06

Career blog

On Thursday October 19, I attended a career start-up workshop held by two twin brothers, they shared their experiences with us as well as some basic knowledge as to how to find a job and what kind of jobs are out there and what are the pros and as well as cons for each job. Vadim Revzin and Sergei Revzin were both very chill individuals, one grew a longer beard so he looked older. I could not recall who was who but the one with the beard said he was jealous of his brother because they grew up together, attended school together and got their first job together, but his brother found another job before he did. They told us that internships are harder than they look, the tasks written down on paper are much less of the actual things you are expected to do in reality, especially of you are planning to work for a small company that is just starting up: you’ll be required to do many tasks that are usually covered by different positions in a bigger company. Continuing on the thought of small companies, they showed us an interesting diagram representing the startup stages of a company: idea/seed, to validation/sprouting, to small company/young plant, then finally a legit company/adult plant. They also told us some skills that employers are looking for: communication/writing emails, data analysis/using excel, customer service/handling difficult people, social media marketing/technician fluency and sales/ persuasion and value communication. Always be over-prepared and know the company you’re applying for because that would make you stand out and make the employer more likely to hire you

Club fair – Emily Qu

There was a club fair held a few weeks back on Thursday and I went there. I didn’t commit to any clubs but I did hear a few club members from different club fairs briefly talk about their clubs and I did put my name and email down for a few of them. To list a few of the stalls I went to were for: UCLA, Baruch Accounting Society, Japanese Anime Asylum, and Baruch NYC Hong Kong Club. The people speaking to us were all very nice, they were talking about a lot stuff that I couldn’t hear for the most part because of the loud speaker playing in the gym. I was awkwardly smiling and nodding, pretending I’m hearing what they’re telling me. Then I checked with Zhilou, I wasn’t the only one who didn’t hear them… we were both blindly nodding due to the circumstances. I was told that UCLA is like family, a big group of asians and all one family. The accounting club is definitely super professional, it was the real deal, not a club that you can chill and relax in, for the parts that I did hear her say, they do business presentations and various internship related activities, I went there for the free cookies. Hong Kong club was also a somewhat family based club?… the girl told me they went on a barbecue trip the week before and gave me an event list and it seems like it’s all a big gathering hangout: the club is to help those Hong Kong international students and to inform others of Hong Kong’s cultures. The last one I went to was anime club, I love to watch anime so I thought I should stop because why not? They had a board for students to write down their favorite anime and I wrote down: ONE PIECE! 800+ episodes and the manga is still ongoing, tons of adventures still waiting to happen, I love One Piece. I didn’t officially join any club but I’ll consider a few.

Trip to the museum – Emily Qu

I went to the Museum of Natural History on Friday September 8th. I went there alone and it was a short visit, but it wasn’t boring, I had fun for the most part. There were many exhibits and they were fairly interesting to look at. I went to the rock section first on the first floor, it wasn’t really my thing so I left the section shortly. Then I visited the African mammal exhibition, this one was more appealing than the other one in my opinion. The waxed animal figures are so realistic, even more realistic in picture. There were elephants, tigers, birds, hippos and so much more. Then I went one more level up to see dinosaur fossils, I see a lot more people there because that’s what the museum is know for after all. The dinosaur fossils are so big, massive in fact so big that I just can’t help but imagine if it was alive, it would definitely have what it takes to swallow me up whole. I also find the fossils not “old-looking”, they actually look really well preserved and polished, so much that it makes me think twice weather it’s made out of plastic or not, it’s super glossy. Then after the short 30 min visit, I went home. The trip was fun but I’ll probably not go alone next time, I would have to go with someone else. The more company there is, I feel like a trip the museum would be more fun and lively.
