Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC14

The Baruch Accounting Society GIM

Last Thursday, I attended the Baruch Accounting Society General Interest Meeting.  I learned a lot about the steps I need to take in order to get a good job as an accounting major.  One major thing that stuck in my head was that I need to start networking so that I can get my foot in the door.  When they first mentioned this, my mind went into a frenzy of thoughts about how I am going to do that and I immediately started to worry because I’m super shy and I really have no idea what I’m doing.  As the meeting went on, I grew more comfortable with the idea because all of the students on the board shared how they were all in the same position I am in currently.  They also talked about how the workshops to help me improve and opportunities to network with employees from various accounting firms that the club offers.  Another thing that happened that made me less timid was the icebreaker they made us play.  We played the game “Zoomed In” where we had to make small groups and guess what the zoomed in image was when it was regular sized.  The girls that were in my group were both older than me but they were very nice and helpful when I asked them a few questions about Baruch.  When the game was over, the answers were revealed and my team got most of the answers wrong.  At the end of the meeting it turned out we actually won and had to do a tie breaker with another team that we also won and got a prize for.  All in all, the meeting was an awesome experience and I can’t wait to attend more and see what else the club has to offer.
