Freshman Seminar Fall 17 LC14

SACC

In preparation for my midterm, and second exam, for calculus, I decided to take a step further in studying and seek help from another person. After studying for numerous hours alone and taking note on what I needed further assistance on, I made an appointment at the student academic consultant center. I was actually provided a very highly rated tutor, and who better to help than a student taking calculus 2, and received an A in Calculus 1. Although I am still unsure about some topics, that was not his fault. In the limited time I had during my gap, I was able to clear up some confusion on multiple topics, and complete the homework questions I was having trouble with. Hopefully his tutoring skills are reflected in my grade. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Either add alt text or mark the image as decorative.

Visiting the MoMA

On Monday October 30th, I visited the Museum of Modern Art, better known as the MoMA. This was my first time here and it was my first time at a museum since probably the 5th grade. I visited with a friend of mine that goes to Pace, who needed help picking an art piece for an assignment he had. We basically went through the whole museum. I don’t really have an interest in this kind of art due to its abstract nature and would much rather look at older paintings that are more realistic. It was interesting how some exhibits transitioned from being seen in the light, to entering a dark room in which some artists chose to display their art. I most likely will not visit this museum again unless I have to for another assignment. It really depends on your interests, but I would not really recommend this to my friend group in particular. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Internship Seminar

During club hours last Thursday, I attended a Career Workshop for Internship Seminar. It was very packed and he said it was the most attendance he has ever seen. Luckily for me, I went early and got a seat.  Throughout his talk he taught us how to get and internship, whats needed in a resume, and how to make one even without any work experience. It was very informational, before I went to the workshop I thought to get an internship was difficult and competitive.  But he said there are thousands of opportunities, paid and unpaid. He taught us how to log onto STARR and find internships that are best fit for us.  He told us how to put together a resume and what you should put.  Overall I am glad that I attended this workshop, because it shed new light to me. There are many opportunities I just have to take action and take advantage of these opportunities.

pop up museum

On Monday, I went to a pop-up museum with my friends. I don’t really remember the name of the pop-up since my friends dragged me to it. However, I do remember that it was close to the High Line and the displays were shattered mirrors. Each wall had two to three mirrors lined up, each with a purposeful break in the center. Each mirror was unique and had its own webbing. The cracks that ran along the surface of each glass was pretty satisfying to look at. When I took pictures with my DSLR, it was interesting to see how the lens focused on either me or the array of webs on each piece of art. The weather was perfect to go to this type of exhibit because the mood was set was for some self-reflecting and extremely artsy photos. Even though I went to the pop-up unwillingly, I enjoyed the exhibit and took some really nice pictures. The high line was also really nice, even on a not so nice day, but I didn’t take a selfie.

Museum of Jewish Heritage

Today, I went to the Museum of Jewish Heritage but could not stay too long because it was closing at 6 PM. But for the brief amount of time I was there, I learned about the timelines of Jewish history, looked at various objects, instruments, saw ancient scrolls like the Torah, and watched videos on various topics like synagogues and education. On the second floor of the museum, I read through timelines information about Elie Wiesel, documents and saw the tricks (picture books and publications) that Hitler used to encourage anti-Semitic beliefs to further the Aryan race. I saw the uniform, the striped pajamas, that was worn by someone who was at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps. Overall, this was an educational experience that I believe further enhanced what I learned in high school, in both my global history and United States history classes. A plus was I got to walk around Battery Park and see the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island from afar.

SACC

Before the calculus midterm I went to student academic consultant center because I knew I was going to need all the help I can get. Math always goes over my head and it is very hard for me to understand it.I went to SACC after making an appointment and my tutor was really smart. She explained the concepts very clearly and I was able to understand it all. I specifically needed help with marginal revenue and continuity. She was very knowledgable in the subject she was teaching which made it easier for me to get everything. This definitely helped me get an 88 on the calculus midterm.I expected higher but this was still a pretty good score. I will definitely be utilizing this free tutoring service. It is a great resource on campus for people like me who are always lost in class.I took a picture and covered my face because I looked weird.

Blog Post #2

Over the weekend, me and my friend decided to go the the NYC hall of science museum with a discounted price cause of our college ID. Even though the price was $13, it was worth the trip. While inside, we saw many exhibitions and hands on experiments to play around on such as extreme weather 3D theatre where we experienced would its like to be in a hurricane, design lab which we played around with pulleys, ziplines, illuminated LED shows, and so much more. But my favourite would have to be the Connected World exhibits where basically we can see and explore places such as the rainforest and see how is it like to be in a actually inside. Also in the exhibit, what makes it more cool is that we can touch and interact with the animation. I would look forward into coming here again because there was so much more exhibitions that I didn’t get a chance to see due the limited amount of time I had. This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. USG GIM

On Thursday, October 5, I attended the General Interest Meeting for USG. I was always a leader in my everyday life, so I was curious to see how I could take that and relate it to my college experience. I heard about the meeting through a friend who is a senior member of USG.
At the meeting, they discussed how you can be accepted into USG. They have weekly meetings in which they discuss problems in the school, and everyone is welcome to sit in on these meetings if they have anything they would like to bring to USG’s attention. We heard brief speeches from the president, Vice President, and each of the main chairs. They showed us how they all operate together and are able to get Baruch the money we need to host all of our events, and give out so much free stuff (our favorite part of college!).
USG is a great idea for anyone looking to have a say in their college experience. Different chairs are responsible for allocating money to clubs and teams and anything else that needs to be paid for. They must all work as a team to reach their goal. To demonstrate this to us, they split us into teams and we had to build the tallest tower using spaghetti and a marshmallow. The highest tower could only be built through communication and teamwork, the most important qualities one can have to get into USG. This GIM really made me interested in joining.

Trip to Museum

This weekend, using my Baruch ID, I was able to visit the Museum of Natural History with my sister in Manhattan. Because of my CUNY ID, I was able to get free entry into most sections of the museum. I went to several exhibits, such as Hall of Meteorites, Hall of Mexico and Central America, Hall of African peoples, and Hall of Asian peoples. When I visited the Hall of Asian peoples, I was really surprised and content to see historical artifacts of Uzbek people, including our traditional clothing and tools for daily use. I was able to learn about the history of many cultures and geographical regions that I had not known before. I also watched a 3D documentary called “Earthflight,” which was about the flight of birds and their journey across the globe during changing seasons. It was really interesting to learn about the history of people and places during my trip to the museum.

Blog Post #2

This past week I attended a Career Workshop, which was Internship Seminar. It was very informational and packed, since many people want to learn how to get an internship in the near future. It was an hour and a half session, and we started off learning the types of internships available.  We learned the difference of internships that pay money verse ones that give academic credit. We then learned about what needs to happen if we are being used for labor and not actually something going towards our major. Later, we learned how to go on STARR to update our profile and how to view and apply for internships as of now. Finally, we learned about what to put on a resume and what not to put. It was nice for me since I learned what supervisors or recruiters are looking for. Overall, this was a great experience for me and I am very glad I took the time out of my day to attend. I can’t wait for more upcoming events! This image requires alt text, but the alt text is currently blank. Either add alt text or mark the image as decorative.
