On September 7, 2017, I attended the Baruch Writing Center workshop which was learning how to interpret and understand essay prompts. After visiting the writing center for the first time, I learned a lot coming out of this. First, I got general instruction of the writing center and I realized this could be potential help for my English class and by the time I walked out, I was correct. I began the workshop by learning and going through the general expectations of writing an essay which include not plagiarizing, use quotes and citations, organization, correct grammar and spelling, etc. I eventually learned that it all led to what an English professor would really want and that was to make sure the essay would have good clarity, accessible language, careful explanation and good effort. Next, I went over a sample prompt and we basically tried to interpret what the prompt was asking for the essay to be about. I read it and answered some questions such as finding the key words in the prompt and whatnot. Finally to close off the workshop, I learned some additional resources to go to if we were having trouble writing the paper as well as learning the steps to writing a good college paper which includes gathering your research, planning the argument, making an outline and developing the draft. At the end of this writing workshop, I’ve learned a lot about not just understanding and interpreting essay prompts but even more beneficial tips on how to write a good and coherent paper. This writing center will help me a lot with this English class!!!!!
