Him or Gym

Two dysfunctional and homosexual married men, aged 23 and 25, try to come to grips with an intermingling of family life and work life. Being recently married and at last moving into a house together, this was a new barrier that they had to overcome. Due to the recent pandemic of Covid-19, both men lost their accounting jobs at the firm in which they met. Struggling to make ends meet, they decided to capitalize on the pandemic through a passion they always held dear – weightlifting. They began a business of manufacturing home gym equipment which in no time at all began booming due to gym closures. Given the surplus of orders from their small company, they are overwhelmed and it ultimately consumes their daily lives.

As days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months, they begin to adapt to their new daily regime. Initially, while being closer than ever in terms of physical proximity, they were more distant than ever emotionally and intimately. In the beginning, they stressed so much about their work burdens such that during sex, they both were thinking about shipping out all their orders on time rather than one another. However, after enough time at home elapsed, they begin to realize that their true passion – while being successful – was each other. The death of a close friend due to Covid brought endless grief on both of them, who then realized it was each other that they needed most in times of the greatest stress rather than the money they made from their orders.

With this new mindset of being a “power couple”, they take a new step into their industry and succeed together. With home gym equipment shipments still dialing in, the couple sees not only monetary success but also success in their relationship and most importantly, in bed.

This film will be a comedy-drama that will focus on interpersonal relationships during a time of crisis such as the global pandemic of Covid-19 in which individuals are forced to work from home. The film explores the question of what benefits interpersonal relationships more – a number in a bank account or one another. The characters begin to realize that even though they are not struggling financially as much as the rest of their counterparts, they put their relationship on the back seat. As work and home life became inextricably bound, both men became trapped in an endless cycle of manufacturing said equipment and shipping out in an orderly fashion. When they fell down, they realized the other had been spotting (the act of supporting another person while exercising) the entire time. The moral of the story herein is this: money truly does not buy happiness and family always comes first. As they have achieved what they wished for and dreamed of together, they are able to reflect on world affairs and they saw how they were able to find a solution to their financial crisis while others were not as fortunate. Now as a happy, successful couple, they decide to donate their money and time to helping others adapt in these hard times and providing financial relief and advice to those in need. As a cliffhanger, they adopt a child and face a whole new set of struggles maintaining this balance between familial and work life.

  1. Hello Leonard! I love comedy now and then and this sounds like it would be funny to watch. Incorporating a story of COVID-19 and having people overcome that by innovating and adapting to their environment seems so fitting during this time. It seems being a business major seemed to affect the story also. I can not wait to see your trailer video.

  2. Hello Leonard
Wow, what an interesting and creative idea. I like how you time your story around quarantine, when the partners are forced to spend more time with each other. Usually, people would get more irritable being locked inside with anybody for a long period of time.

    Hey Leonard,

Your trailer idea is really cute and as Jorge mentioned I can completely see it playing out. I love that you added current events into the plot and tying into an alternative reality. I’m really excited to see your trailer.

  3. Hey Leonard! This is am extremely creative idea. I like how you incorporated today’s events (COVID-19) into the story. This is a very real story as the pandemic has affected practically everyone in the world. It is also very realistic because most people have never spent this much time at home. Excited to see the video!

Hello Leonard! I can see that you have very clear your story and I really like it. I noticed you touch topics like adapting, like when they lost their company job and how they ventured in a new field of business. Something that also caught my attention was What means to be successful? For some people being successful means to have lots of money but for others, could be to have peace of mind, or having a beautiful relation with their family.
