Some of you have probably seen or heard of the influx on post-it notes throughout NYC subways after the last presidential election. These post-its, plastered across subway stations in Queens, and Brooklyn, and Manhattan, were full of positive ideas in a time where people felt mass negativity. The overwhelming response from those post-its gave me this idea to combat the issue of the lack of gender inequality awareness in our immediate community!
Instructions:
1. Get some colorful post it notes.
2. Draw a stick figure of a woman and a stick figure of a man next to one another and draw a heart with an equals sign inside of it in between them. (All aspects of the drawing should be the same size, and take up the entirety of the post-it space.)
3. On the bottom of the post it write in this link as clearly as possible: http://www.equalitynow.org/take-action
4. Post the post-it note(s) in your local subway station, or even at your school. The idea is to get it to be seen by as many people as possible.
*If we can get enough people at Baruch aware of the issue, we can even try to post them solely in the 6 train 23rd street station to gain maximum impact of a specific neighborhood!*
The idea behind this is that when people see the post-its in large quantities it will capture their curiosity in seeing what the site is about. This website called Equality Now promotes gender equality for women throughout the world, and offers it’s viewers to take action though their interactive links. Each link gives you the opportunity to sign petitions or send letters out to government officials to bring attention to, as well as combat issues such as the global rape epidemic, protecting girls from child marriage, and protecting girls and women from female genital mutilation. The website also gives you the ability to donate through mail, or online. Let’s become activists!
