Social Media and Employee Discrimination

Social media is like a window that show our lives and our behaviors. There are a lot of debates of whether employers should take a look into their interviewees or employees Facebook, Instagram etc.. Some employees claim that use of social media is against them and against their privacy. They have the right of  posting  in their social media, without affecting their status at work . However, many corporations advocates that they should check or monitor more their social media employees. Based on the Wall Street Journal article, “The number of people fired over social-media posts is rising, and many employers look closely at a job candidate’s online presence before making a decision”.(Anonymous, n.p).

Many companies monitor it employees activities, not only in the workplace but also in their social media. Surprisingly, many other companies not only look at their employee’s profile but they also look at their future new hires. That why I will be creating two information policies to protect and support employees for not being discriminated, before they even had the chance of have the interview. I do not think that it should be legal to check somebody’s facebook to be able for the company to come to the conclusion that they should or should not provide an opportunity to somebody to have an interview with them. I think that by checking people’s social media allows the company to see their picture. Some companies can be judgemental and judge somebody because on the way they look or what they have posted on Facebook in the pas. Companies should not also steal or use their employees passwords or ask for them to check employees activities on their social media profile

The first policy that I create is : Employees and interviewees are protected by stored communications act  . Every company that have been trapped discriminating employees or future hires, just because of their facebook profile or Facebook post the state where the company company is located may press charges and give a indemnification to the affected party.

The second policy I did not create it I change points of an existent policy. The policy that I changed or I improved was “ A Maryland bill, S.B. 991, introduced in March 2011, would prohibit an employer from requiring an employee or a candidate to provide his online usernames or passwords.” . What I would change about this policy is that it should not only be prohibited to ask for a employee social media password, but also  steal their employees passwords. By stealing I meant that some employees use social media on their work computers and some companies used that to get their password and look at their profile.
