Reading 1: “How to be an Artist” by Jerry Saltz

I enjoyed reading “How to be an Artist” by Jerry Saltz because I am terrible at drawing, painting and sketching. I was never great at creating art. However, the way he wrote lesson one to six really encourage me to try. Especially in Lesson one “But art doesn’t have to make sense. It doesn’t even need to be good” and  “Don’t think good or bad. Think useful, pleasurable, strange”. Oftentimes with art, I am afraid I will be judge for doing a poor job that I end up not doing it or constantly think what other people might think about it.

There were a few things that stood out to me from the article “How to be an Artist” by Jerry Saltz that was interesting. The first one is from Lesson fifteen “Understand that art is Not just for looking At” was interesting and made the term Arts and Crafts much more meaningful to me. Especially the passage about “art has been a verb, something that does things to or for you, that makes things happen”, that are is more than just aesthetics. The art can be intended toward a specific audience like the example with the eye painted on the sarcophagus.

I was surprised that Artist was underpaid and the percentage of Artist that will become recognized are very low from Lesson twenty because majority of the time when I hear about Artwork being sold was always at a large amount. For instances, a graffiti artist such as banksy is selling his art for large amount of money. This was a good article that encourage me to attempt drawing and that no one starts out perfect and I should not assume the same and should practice and refine my skills. I learned that art is more than visual appeals and can have many interpretation and meaning.
