Even though the book was published during 2001,It was interesting that computer and art was never initially intended to be joined to create a new form of Media. In present time we can see how technologies are redefining Art and the ways it can be created. Lev Manovich defined five principles of new media art in his book “The language of New Media”. The five principles are numerical representation, modularity, automation, variability, and transcoding
The first principle is numerical representation in New Media. It refers to the computer coding of the art whether it is audio, video, or image. The modularity principle is the combination of various elements that can be used to create something new. The idea of every aspect such as lighting, pixel, images, frequencies, etc. can be capture into separate elements. The automation principle can be view as styles or themes. These are things that can be automated, and some examples can be the different filters when we take pictures with out phones. The variability principle is the ability to manipulate every element such as a musical note and adjust the tone, length, and pitch to create something different. The last principle is transcoding. This principle means art is no longer confine to an object at a physical location, it refers to the first principle of numerical representation. This is to transform the into codes that can be access anywhere.
In conclusion, I agree with Lev Manovich’s thought regarding technologies influence in Art. I will imagine technologies will have stronger impact as new technologies are developed such as holograms and some new media art are created using codes. Perhaps programmers will be considering an artist and their algorithm will be sold as art that can reproduce the new media art.
