Changing Flushing’s Chinese Cultural Landscape as Gentrification Lurks Its Way In

Flushing, Queens is undergoing a sudden shift in gears in terms of real estate developments in the neighborhood. Instead of the the traditional three-floor family homes, companies are now starting to push for high-rise luxury condominiums, malls, and office spaces. While this may lead to having more money flow through Flushing, it may potentially harm the smaller local businesses that have been serving Flushing for countless number of years. The luxury developments are targeting affluent Chinese immigrants who would have otherwise moved into Manhattan to fill their condominiums, recognizing that Chinese immigrants would have no trouble getting accustomed to the large and active Chinese community in Flushing. The sudden development efforts may add to the community, but also threaten many of its cultural and historical traditions and values.
