More than a decade has passed since the dreadful attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001. Though it was so long ago we continue to remember and Bay Ridge has done so for every year since. Gathering at American Veterans Memorial Pier every year for 15 years, Senator Marty Golden has made it a mission to commemorate the lives lost. “Those who were infants are now teenagers. Those who were in college are now in the workforce and supporting a family. Many who walked home from work that day are now retired. Many things have changed but what remains constant is our resolve to show terrorists across this world that despite their cowardly attempt to destroy our nation, brave Americans continue to stand tall, shoulder to shoulder. Just look around this place right now.” the senator states to the pier full of people.
This beautiful event was filled with people of all ages, ethnicity’s, backgrounds, and yet they all became one on that pier. Speeches were given and a 21-gun salute was presented. The candle light vigil was a challenge due to the winds but people made it happen; even if it meant cupping the light or holding their cellphones lights up high. Afterwards the Boy Scouts released balloons as a sign of hope for the future. Something as tragic as this should be remembered. We became one after that day.
