This article discusses the case of fruit consumption. Dr. Ludwig of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital claims that fruits make an individual feel fuller and are digested at a slower rate due to its fructose content. Regarding the types of fruits recommended to consume, Dr. Katz of the Yale University Prevention Research Center an individual should “eat the rainbow” meaning that many different types of fruits should be consumed given their different properties in antioxidants and nutrients. Further, it is claimed that fruits shouldn’t be juiced as they might lose fiber content.

Boosting Health With Local Food

This article discusses whether eating locally farmed food is better for an individual’s health. University of North Carolina researchers claim that local foods (within a 100 mile radius) tend to be fresher and they are less likely to be processed, given they don’t come from large commercial food companies. They further claim that since shopping at local food markets is pleasurable, it will lead to more variety in diet given individuals’ personal connection with the vendors. Also, they have the ability to question the sources of the products, pesticide use, farming method, etc.

A Musical Message for Children on Healthy Eating

The following article describes former Rockette, Helen Butleroff-Leahy’s efforts in expressing the importance of a healthy diet to children in underprivileged neighborhoods. While portraying her message she incorporates singing, dancing, and even sometimes rapping into her presentation. By making it more enjoyable for the children it makes them more open minded to listening to what she has to say. One of her raps reads “You are what you eat. You got the power, you got the might, to eat right and keep it light.” This article is relevant to our topic of eating healthy because Ms. Butleroff-Leahy is showing children, at a younger age, how a healthy diet can improve their lives so they can start making healthier decisions now that will carry on into their adult life.

Michelle Obama Promotes Healthy Eating With a Grass-Roots Campaign

The following article is talking about the emphasis that Michelle Obama is putting on her healthy eating campaign. In Washington there was a “Healthy Recipe” contest held where 108 contestants competed in a street fair type of event where they presented their most tasty, healthy recipe in hopes of winning the grand prize, a lunch at the white house. Mr. Kass, who runs Michelle Obama’s campaign stated, “This is an incredible opportunity to utilize the platform we have in the White House to incentivize kids to get engaged in preparing healthy meals.” This article shows how important health and nutrition are in today’s day and age, so much that the national government is putting their time and effort into helping people get on the right track. This article pertains to our topic of eating healthy because it shows the great lengths that certain people will go to ensure that their message about the importance of leading a healthy life gets out into the public eye.
