The film Passing (2021) was rift with unspoken tension. So many of the characters were indirectly clashing and competing with each other. Clare and Irene, Irene and Brian, Brian and Clare, Clare and her husband etc. What I like about these unspoken conflicts is that it explores the diversity of the Black experience. Different characters have different ways of coping with their Blackness and as a result these clashes naturally occur. How Irene and Clare handle being light skinned is very different and as a result there is tension between them. Irene disagrees with Clare’s passing and is outraged at the language Clare allows her husband to use. They stand on different sides of the fence although they are in very similar situations. What makes the conversation even more interesting is that both Irene and Clare have justifiable explanations for their actions. As they are just trying to survive, the way they both go about it can be valid. In fact, all the Black characters have legitimate reasons for their ways of thinking. This once again creates a complex understanding of race and survival and makes the conflicts all the more morally ambiguous.
