Although the benefits one may receive from engaging in game play are limitless, these potential conveniences have been condensed to those that have been deemed most important.

Abstract Thought:
Most people are visual learners. This may explain why video games may function as a catalyst for the mental development of young children. In an experiment involving 77 undergraduate students who were randomly assigned a video game to play, the researchers discovered that the players exhibited increased levels of persistence and spatial understanding. Interactive game play supplies its operators with another perspective or way of viewing and potentially understanding a concept that, under normal circumstances, would have taken much longer.

 

Decision-Making Skills:
For some, video games may enable individuals to establish a sense of independence. Regarding children, it is during game play that a child will experience, most likely for the first time, the ability to make a choice without consulting others or seeking the advice from those who are considered to be experienced with all of the worlds dealings.

Hand-Eye Coordination:
Playing video games has its physical benefits as well. Game play enhances and sharpens our physical responses to our mental responses. Fieldwork conducted by researchers from the University of Rochester and New York University shows that experienced competitors have shown to have a shorter reaction time than the average player.

Teamwork:
Video games also encourage the concept, as well as the application, of teamwork through the use of “multiplayer mode”. In some cases, one may be unable to advance further in the game without the help of another player. This strengthens the value of teamwork and places responsibility on each player for the welfare of the other.
