I am considering shooting a photo essay about Japan fest. Japan fest is held all over New York City on different dates starting in June and ending in October. Japan Fest is the biggest Japanese food festival In New York city that celebrates Japanese culture through a number of food vendors. I will be following a number of vendors and getting peoples insight on the festival.
For my photo essay, I plan to explore the Mishkin Gallery here at Baruch and what it offers its students. The Mishkin Gallery “promotes projects by artists and intellectuals who demonstrate how and why creative practice is a crucial force in nurturing diversity, tolerance and shaping culture.” Their current exhibit is We didn’t ask permission, we just did it… The show honors three historic exhibitions in Puerto Rico from 2000 to 2016 which were crucial to the “independent spirit of artmaking” across the region. I hope to capture the current exhibit and how its themes are critical and reflective of Baruch’s population.
One month ago today, a memorial for O’Shae Sibley was organized after his murder on July 29, 2023. He was murdered for voguing to a Beyoncé song, a style of dancing created and popularized by Black Queer people in the ballroom scene. As a Black Queer person myself, it served as yet another reminder that even in New York, we are not always safe. Through this assignment, I hope to gain some insight on how other Queer individuals within the city not only feel a month later, but how they’re able to survive and express joy despite all the hardships that come with our identities. I hope to find people to interview through friends of friends, Baruch’s GLASS organization, and other queer organizations that I may be able to find throughout New York.With the photos I take, I hope to showcase Black joy and the fact that despite everything, we still can and deserve happiness and equality.

My story idea is taking pictures of the San Gennaro feast in Little Italy which takes place from September 14 through September 24. Growing up in Brooklyn, especially in an historically Italian neighborhood, I have experienced related festivals such as the recent Santa Rosalia in Bensonhurst growing up. I this this is a good opportunity to document because it is something I have been familiar with and it is wonderful being able to document Italian culture and also the community that continues to thrive. I would love to take pictures of the scenery, foods, entertainment and the diverse amount of people who attend. Also highlighting the old-timers and younger generation of people coexisting together.

My idea for the photo essay is to display the emotions of the fans while watching New York’s most intense soccer game. New York City Football Club vs New York Bulls. The title would be “A battle in the boogie down Bronx”. The reason Why I believe this is a good piece is because soccer is growing and people are emotionally invested in the sport. The arrival of big names has given more attention to the league. This photo essay would tell the people that there are teams in NY that would eventually play players like Lionel Messi.- Jared Mero Palma
New York City is one of the most recognized cities, when it comes to the fashion industry. With fashion week around the corner, the streets of soho will be flooded with artists, and designers from all over the world. For this photo essay I want to follow an undergrond fashion stylist- infleuncer, that I follow on instagram. He is an 18 year old student that is driven by his artitistic vision not only through clothes, but through life as well. I will be following him around his day to capture his creative process and to take an inside look into how a fashion stylist/ infleuncer gets ready for fashion week.
Brief: So many people are okay with existing with no notion of the past they manifest. As a major consumer and follower of fashion, it’s always been interesting to see the birth and evolution of this circuit of culture. I am seeking to understand how a fashion brand’s culture manages to become a staple in homes. I want to understand how a brand’s “status” reflects and exudes to the fans and people who consume them.
Setting: I don’t have a set location yet but I would be interested in street interviews, top locations: The Met, Various NYFW show venues (specifically high fashion vs. streetwear)

What drew you towards this exhibition?
How does one’s favorite brand’s “social status,” affect how one may carry themselves and communicate with the world?
Does “high fashion,” brands mean that consumers of high tax brackets are consuming them or is it a matter of fitting the role you aspire to be? (Vice versa for consumers of streetwear)
