I could not attend the Photoville Exhibition online nor in -person, so I choose to review one of the exhibition, from the Photoville website, which is “Syzygy, The Vision” by the artist, Lola Flash. “Syzygy, The Vision” is the self portrait project series where it displays arrangement of the past, present future.
This self portrait series consists of four photos of Lola Flash in an orange jump suit that slightly looks like spacesuit. She is also wearing an astronaut helmet on a orange prison outfit that makes it look like some kind of orange prison/space outfit at the space or in future or in different planet.
Lola Flash claimed to illustrate that he wanted to break free from the America’s mass incarceration and dive into the future of divine American lifestyle which free of racism, discrimination and inequality. As she claimed, “Heavy on my mind is the horror of America’s mass incarceration and the question of breaking free. Can our truth-seekers lead us to the place where we are superhuman—shedding our Black bodies of institutional “isms”? My soul is hopeful for a divine future …”
Also the orange prison spacesuit she is wearing symbolizes that she is imprisoned in this America’s mass incarceration. Overall I really enjoyed the concept of this exhibition.
