The Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of 50k US households. Each year they include special topics alongside the basic questions that they usually ask; in 2010 they included questions on computer and internet use at home. The tables include household and individual characteristics by school enrollment, age, race, sex and Hispanic origin at the national and state level. You can view the announcement and access the tables here in Excel and CSV format.

Graduate Students computers now on 2nd floor
While I was on the reference desk 4-6 BCTC told me that they had completed their work on relocating the graduate student computers to the second floor. I appears that they are on in the tables located at 4A. BCTC put up a sign,Graduate Computer Workstations, which apparently was used previously because it refers to the computers being located on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors. Early in my reference desk shift some grad students wondered about the removal of the computers from the floors.
SPSS on 2nd Floor BCTC Computers
Confirmed last night that on station #48 and perhaps others version #18 is available but the license has expired. Students get a message to that effect. Version #19 is available in the BCTC Lab on 6th floor. Version #19 will be made accessible on the 2nd floor as soon as they is opportunity to get to the computers to do so.
Spotting a Keylogger in Public Access Computers
A couple of librarian blogs (see posts at the Swiss Army Librarian and Librarian.net) have recently pointed to this story about a library in England where a couple of USB devices were found plugged into public access computers. Those devices were keyloggers that were able to record every single keystroke. Unlike a USB memory drive that stands by itself in a USB port, these keylogger devices also had the keyboard plugged into them. I suppose we should keep an eye out for anything unusual we see plugged into computers.
