Rita gave me the heads up yesterday that we can get to Hoover’s from off campus again. Although the content is actually within the WestlawNext Campus Research database, we’ve got a listing for “Hoover’s” on our databases page that takes you straight into that content in Westlaw.

Replacements for Hoover’s
Now that we no longer subscribe to Hoover’s, we’re seeing a number of students asking where it is and how to access it. Many of those students looking for Hoover’s are in BUS 1000 and have been using the Beginner’s Guide to Business Research tutorial, which points them to that database as a way to get basic company info.
Louise says that we’ll get that tutorial updated so it no longer mentions Hoover’s. In the meanwhile, she recommended to me that we steer students to Mergent Online, which will give them the basic info they need (including the ability to generate a stock price chart for a company to which you can add data for up to four other companies). She also suggested we send students to Business & Company Resource Center.
I’d also like to note that with the redesign of the EBSCOhost interface, there is a slightly less circuitous route to get to the thorough company profiles in Business Source Complete that are published by Datamonitor. Here’s the fastest way to find a Datamonitor company profile in BSC:
- From the main search screen, click “More” in the top navigation bar (up where it says “New Search | Publications | Thesaurus | Author Profiles”
- When you click “More,” select “Company Profiles” from the drop down list of options
- On the Company Profiles page that opens, search by company name and then click the corresponding PDF icon for the company in the search results list.
Hoover’s cancelled as of 7/31/10
As agreed with the business librarians.
We still have access to the information via Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw Campus (News).
Hoover’s back on
Hoover’s is back! Enjoy!
access to Hoover’s on Westlaw Campus is working
I just had a student who asked for help since Hoover’s wasn’t working. Hoover’s company profiles are available on Westlaw Campus and this worked fine for what she was looking for. She was interested in Apple’s competitors. I also showed her S&P Net Advantage and Factiva.
Hoover’s problems
We are experiencing problems accessing Hoover’s at this time. I am looking into it. Thank you for your patience.
Finding Institutional Investor Information for a non-American Company
A patron was looking for institutional investor information about a publicly traded company based in Hong Kong.
After searching in vain using databases such as S&P, Hoover’s, Mergent and even Thomson One I consulted with a colleague.
Linda E. suggested checking Thomson Financial, where we were actually able to find annual reports for the company going back in time.
I referred the patron to the Subotnik Financial Services Center to have a look in Reuters 3000 and Bloomberg Professional.
Out of curiosity, this afternoon Harold and I took a walk downstairs to have a look to see what we could find about it with our own eyes. Sure enough we found more information. Reuters 3000 and Bloomberg Professional allowed us to look at the latest quarterly holdings of the company’s institutional investors.
It turns out the particular company is also in fact traded here in the US, but only on the OTC pink sheet market.
This was a lesson to me that there is a lack of coverage for international companies and pink sheet listed companies in some of our library databases and that both Reuters 3000 and Bloomberg Professional are a good resources for this type of information.
Many thanks to Linda E. and Harold!
