week 10

This may seem like a basic answer but when I think of games, i think of Mario. The only game experience I enjoy are obstacle courses or some sort of race, therefore, I like playing Mario. After reading “Selections from The Art of Game Design,” I didn’t realize how much time and effort you have to put in order to create a game. The user never thinks of the behind the scenes, they just play the game. I honestly thought designing a game requires a lot of equipment, but after reading the article I learned that all you need to know is decision making. Some might believe it’s simple, but I personally think it’s hard. Mario is a well established and designed game. I can’t seem to think of anything you might want to add to their games. But if I really had to pick, maybe having a virtual reality experience can be cool. Playing Mario as if ur actually there might be very unique and interesting. Again, going back to the decision making process. How can we execute the vr idea? Honestly, I don’t even know. It seems complicated. But if I had to guess, I’d assume we would have to code some sort of interacting feature regarding the virtual reality headset.

Week 10 Response – Cristina

I think one of my dreams has been to be able to consistently play one game with friends. So how I’ll be able to interact with friends in the game is pretty important. It also needs to be able to hook all of us into the game and continue to be interested in it for a long time. That could be through aesthetics, game mechanics, storyline, or even the characters in the games themselves. All of these tie into a game’s experience and help determine whether the game is a good fit for each person or not. It’s pretty hard to find a game that fulfills everyone’s requirements!

Week 10 Response – Helen Ng Chang

The sort of experience that I would like to engage with a game is something far in the future, not too far I hope. I want a very realistic virtual reality experience where the player can control what they wish to do. For instance, one playthrough could be a player who wishes to farm and raise a community around an exchange of goods and services. Another instance could be a player who wishes to travel a long adventure, overcoming obstacles and eliminating enemies that cross their paths. A game that I enjoy has a plethora of interactive options where you can sidetrack into different objectives and areas of the map. What means the most in a game to me is enabling an experience, more specifically the feeling of reward and accomplishment.

Week 10 Response

Jesse Schell wrote “The game is not the experience. The game enables the experience, but it is not the experience… Game designers don’t have it so easy. We give the player a great deal of control over the pacing and sequence of events in the experience.” In a game, I would like to experience a different world. I want to be able to get lost in the game’s world and also have a good balance of control. I would not enjoy a game experience where the limitations are similar to the natural world. For example, I would not enjoy a game that simply ends when I fall too hard or from too high. A possible element of this experience could be to create a way to choose what “powers” the player possesses. For instance, you can pick to fly, breathe underwater, etc. This can make the player have control over the game, and also give them the ability to explore the game world freely without limitations.

Week 7 Response

The artist I picked from the article ”7 ways of misunderstanding interactive art” is Sherrie Rabinowitz. She was an American video artist and a pioneer in satelite based telecommunications art. Rabinowitz developed a series of projects called ”Aesthetic Research in Telecommunications” in the 1975. These projects addressed a multitude of telecollaborative arts and virtual space performance issues that never been tested. one unique thing about her artwork is that during this time, satellites were the only viable means of transmitting full motion video across oceans in near-realtime, so her artwork basically reflects that idea and portrays the whole aesthetics of it. Her artwork really reflects the 80’s in my opinion because of the colors she uses. almost like an x-ray vision. This is the link where I got to see all the cool artwork by Sherrie Rabionowitz.
