Migration Stories in Art & Music

The two songs “American Land” by Bruce Springsteen and “Follow Me” by Moxie Raia and Wyclef share similarities, but both songs also have their differences. The similarities the songs share is that they do have a connection to immigrants migrating, the songs express the possibilities of what an immigrant could go through, and the songs also expresses the sacrifices to get what they want. The differences between the two songs is the tone of “American Land” sounds more upbeat than the “Follow Me” song, Bruce Springsteen’s “American Land” is more about immigrants making the most out of their opportunities rather than Moxie Raia’s and Wyclef’s “Follow Me” mentions more about the struggle of migration for immigrants, and the message delivery from both songs could make the listener feel for immigrants based on the tone of the songs. The assumptions the songs make about migrants is that they do have it tough when they leave their home country, but immigrants do benefit from the opportunities in the next country they choose to live in. It’s important to Favianna Rodriguez that immigrants tell their own stories because she herself grew up in immigrant Latinx neighborhood in the Bay Area, so there is something that all immigrants could relate to from experiences coming to the U.S and life living in the U.S. The strengths and limitations of art for communicating those stories is that a strength could be the image getting the person’s attention and a limitation could be a person making their opinion/interpretation of the art on whether they agree or disagree with the message.
