  1. I enjoyed reading Rehmat’s story as it was not only effective in depicting the conditions leading up to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, but also gave us a person to connect with on an emotional level. I felt that the main character was unique in that she had goals for herself beyond those that her mother had for her. She wanted to be more than a housewife and pursue a career for herself. Having this background on the main character showed me how genuine of a person she was, and how unfair her circumstances were. The reality of the incident was that each and every one of the people stuck in the fire had their own story as this character did. They all had lives and dreams they wished to pursue, and ultimately they all reached the same terrible end to their lives. I felt that Rehmat’s story truly showed how horrific this fire was, and the need for the reform it sparked. By the end of the story, I was emotionally moved and felt that I could connect with this character who only wanted a better life for herself and her family.

  2. I liked reading Rehmat’s story because it gives a background to the women who worked in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory. In historical documents the Triangle Shirtwaist factory is regarded as a tragedy where many girls died but it does not mention anything about the girls beyond their basic information; it does not give them a life. Rather they are just names on paper that will soon be forgotten weeks later. I liked that Rehmat’ story gave a woman in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory a story and consquenquenlty remembered her life and aspirations that the newspapers did not. I also liked that her character was very unique in that she was an independent woman who aspired for her dreams. Usually, one hears about families working in factories to support each other but Rehmat’s character was truly pursuing the “American Dream” by going out to New York and brazenly following her dreams. She reminds me of women today who work for their future and aspirations instead of working for collective group’s future. However sadly the story ended, I feel that the story recognized the life of a woman and the Triangle Shirtwaist factory led to reforms in working conditions so I don’t think the women’s sacrifice went to waste.
