The Arts in New York City

  1. Fat Waller would most likely support that the point of art is to bring joy to the world. He often performed at “rent parties” that were meant to be a fun way to raise enough money for rent. The parties involved a gathering of friends that shared good times and music alike. In his song “Honeysuckle Rose,” Waller produces an upbeat tune. The music video also consists of various dance scenes, and Waller is smiling the whole time. “Ain’t Misbehavin’” shows a party in which the guests are socializing with the song playing in the background. Even the musicians are enjoying themselves as they play their instruments and watch the guests dance along. Overall, the music videos and gigs performed by Waller seem to show his emphasis on having fun with art.

  2. I had to comment on this one because I loved the videos Dil showed the class of Fats Waller. When I picture a classical party musician, I always think of someone like Fats. His facial expressions and free style is what appeals to me most about him. I can understand why people would invite him to perform at their rent parties: they could pay rent for the next couple of years if the party were this fun and lively. As a former pianist myself, I have a deep appreciation for this type of style of playing because I know how difficult it is to make the piano sound as lively and organized as Waller. I feel that we should all strive to be as positive and lively as Waller was because his enjoyment out of life is truly shown. He wears his heart on his sleeve and he can play a piano darn well.
