The Arts in New York City

  1. Belinda’s group did a great job summarizing the history and cultural atmosphere of the Upper West Side. Although I have walked past the American Folk Art Museum on multiple occasions, I had never realized that it showcases art by artists who were self-taught and have mastered their craft through practice. Another interesting thing I learned from reading the culture guide was that Beacon Theatre is considered the “older sister” of Radio City Music Hall. One interesting location I would like to add to the list is Symphony Space. Symphony Space is a multi-disciplinary performing arts organization that offers classes and performances in literature, music, film, dance, comedy and theatre. The organization’s mission is to be a nationally and internationally recognized cultural leader.

  2. Belinda and her group produced an impressively thorough guide of the Upper West Side. The guide includes a detailed and interesting historic overview, cultural insight, and landmarks to be found in the neighborhood. One cultural institution which I learned an interesting detail about is the The New York Historical Society Hall. Founded in 1804, it is the oldest museum in New York City. Another interesting detail that I learned from the guide is that Barney Greengrass is one of the oldest food spots in the neighborhood, and a favorite among locals. I definitely will remember to make a stop at this family-owned deli the next time I visit the Upper West Side. One cultural institution one can find in the Upper West Side that was not mentioned in the guide is the Shearith Israel Synagogue. The synagogue was established in 1654, and until 1825 it was the only Jewish congregation in NYC. Today the structure boasts a remarkable neoclassic architectural design.
