  1. When I first realized Scott Joplin was the composer for a childhood favorite tune of “Maple Leaf Rag”, it was almost like having an epiphany. I really enjoyed the irregular beat and rhythm of ragtime and it does make me want to dance to it (even if it wasn’t meant for dancing). I found it interesting and admirable how Joplin was able to compose such a style which salutes to his African American heritage as missed beats were usually associated with African Americans. Despite the racial tensions during his time, Joplin persevered and composed successful and popular ragtime pieces. It was disappointing that Joplin could only survive the racist music industry during his time and eventually got sick. However, his contributions of iconic ragtime pieces such as “Maple Leaf Rag” will live on in my childhood and as well as in others.
