  1. David’s analysis and review of the film “Brighton Beach Memoirs” provides a very descriptive insight into the film’s plot, and how its events correlate with our course themes. The film is set in the Brighton Beach neighborhood of Brooklyn during The Great Depression. David elaborates on several of the problems the film’s protagonist, fourteen-year-old Eugene Jerome, and his family face. The middle-class family is faced with the typical hardships of The Great Depression, along with several complications. For example, Eugene’s father suffers a fatal heart attack as a result of overworking. Moreover, David shows how the film is also centered around problems exclusive to Eugene such as puberty and a search for identity. This mix gives the film a humorous touch which is refreshing in a film set during the Depression era. Lastly, I think David was very effective in addressing the course themes of New York City lifestyles and immigration. For example, David related Eugene’s upbringing in Brighton Beach to the neighborhood’s certain Jewish values and traditions.
