The Arts in New York City

  1. I thought that Talia’s story about the Great Depression in New York City was very accurate and held emotional appeal. The events of the story were realistic and for this reason, made the ending both believable and heart wrenching. People in the Hoovervilles, while trying to remain hopeful that something would change, ultimately lived in misery. Small things in life, such as a loved one, was all many people had and therefore that was the only thing they had to give them motivation in life. The way in which the main character seems to have given up by the end of the story, shows how quickly that little bit of hope could be torn away. The reality of New York during the Great Depression was grim, and therefore not always a popular topic among audiences. In my opinion, Talia’s writing was extremely effective in describing the depression and the reality of most people’s lives at the time.
