Founder

My name is Damele Elliott-Hubbard and I began the Our Lives Matter project as a way to champion the voices of our students. As they speak for themselves, they resist outside forces that would negate their power, and they affirm their place in our community, and in wider society. I hope you will join me in this endeavor. It is my goal that every Baruch student will blog, make videos, write songs, rap, write poetry, and plays about why their lives matter. Let us encourage them that their lives matter truly do matter!

Bio and Contact Info:

I taught in the public school system for five years, before transitioning to teaching at the collegiate level. I teach Composition at Medgar Evers College, and have done so since 2007. I taught Composition and Creative Writing at BMCC for five years, and am currently teaching Composition at Baruch College.

I am the author of three books, Fields of Gold, A Touch of Destiny and the recently published David’s Kingdom. I received my Ph.D in Composition and Rhetoric from the CUNY Graduate Center. As a Black feminist, I am interested in the way in which gender and racial politics intersected within the Black liberation movement, commonly referred to as the Civil Rights Movement. My specific research project investigates the suppression of Black Female Rhetoric by Black male leaders during that time.
