One thing we all have in common is that at some point in our lives we were under the care of a physician. Many of us were born in a hospital where we were assessed and analyzed by a defined set of criteria which was used to decide our level of health and if deemed out of balance, we were given a diagnosis and plan of treatment.
Yet how knowledgeable are we on the history of medicine and how we got to where we are now with the dominant use of pharmaceuticals to treat illnesses and disease. As we live in the age of google, I will not seek to explain that which we can all research. Instead, I wish to evoke a sense of curiosity and hope that we will all endeavor to dedicate a few hours each week to understanding the history behind medicine as nearly 70 per cent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug and nearly 50 per cent take two different prescriptions drugs daily.
What I hope to impress upon my readers is the need to differentiate between dealing with physical trauma (i.e damage to limbs etc.) and treating disease (dis ease within the body at a cellular level). Our bodies were made to heal itself therefore the question is are we helping our hurting the process?
